Zusammenfassung: | Religion has always been a fundamental force for constructing identity, from antiquity to the contemporary world. The transformation of ancient cults into faith systems, which we recognise now as major world religions, took place in the first millennium AD, in the period we call 'Late Antiquity'. Our argument is that the creative impetus for both the emergence, and much of the visual distinctiveness of the world religions came in contexts of cultural encounter. Bridging the traditional divide between classical, Asian, Islamic and Western history, this exhibition and its accompanying catalogue highlights religious and artistic creativity at points of contact and cultural borders between late antique civilisations. This catalogue features the creation of specific visual languages that belong to four major world religions: Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam. The imagery still used by these belief systems today is evidence for the development of distinct religious identities in Late Antiquity. Emblematic visual forms like the figure of Buddha and Christ, or Islamic aniconism, only evolved in dialogue with a variety of coexisting visualisations of the sacred.0As late antique believers appropriated some competing models and rejected others, they created compelling and long-lived representations of faith, but also revealed their indebtedness to a multitude of contemporaneous religious ideas and images. 00Exhibition: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK (19.10.2017-18.02.2018) |

spelling | Imagining the divine art and the rise of world religions Jaś Elsner, Stefanie Lenk, et al. Oxford Ashmolean [2017] © 2017 232 Seiten Illustrationen, Karten txt rdacontent sti rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Religion has always been a fundamental force for constructing identity, from antiquity to the contemporary world. 00Exhibition: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK (19.10.2017-18.02.2018) Buddha v563-v483 (DE-588)118664417 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 500-900 gnd rswk-swf Kunsthandwerk (DE-588)4073883-8 gnd rswk-swf Frühchristentum (DE-588)4129954-1 gnd rswk-swf Kultgegenstand (DE-588)4500752-4 gnd rswk-swf Gottesvorstellung (DE-588)4125333-4 gnd rswk-swf Visualisierung (DE-588)4188417-6 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 gnd rswk-swf Islamische Kunst (DE-588)4138060-5 gnd rswk-swf Beziehung (DE-588)4145198-3 gnd rswk-swf Gottesdarstellung (DE-588)4124919-7 gnd rswk-swf Weltreligion (DE-588)4065455-2 gnd rswk-swf Bildnis (DE-588)4006627-7 gnd rswk-swf Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 gnd rswk-swf Entwicklung (DE-588)4113450-3 gnd rswk-swf Religiöse Kunst (DE-588)4193793-4 gnd rswk-swf Britische Inseln (DE-588)4090131-2 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4135467-9 Ausstellungskatalog Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK 19.10.2017-18.02.2018 Oxord gnd-content Kunst (DE-588)4114333-4 s Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s Weltreligion (DE-588)4065455-2 s Religiöse Kunst (DE-588)4193793-4 s Beziehung (DE-588)4145198-3 s DE-604 Gottesdarstellung (DE-588)4124919-7 s Kultgegenstand (DE-588)4500752-4 s Gottesvorstellung (DE-588)4125333-4 s Visualisierung (DE-588)4188417-6 s Frühchristentum (DE-588)4129954-1 s Entwicklung (DE-588)4113450-3 s Buddha v563-v483 (DE-588)118664417 p Bildnis (DE-588)4006627-7 s Islamische Kunst (DE-588)4138060-5 s Britische Inseln (DE-588)4090131-2 g Christentum (DE-588)4010074-1 s Kunsthandwerk (DE-588)4073883-8 s Geschichte 500-900 z Elsner, Jaś 1962- (DE-588)138028354 edt Lenk, Stefanie 1988- (DE-588)1070472190 edt Ashmolean Museum (DE-588)1007560-4 isb British Museum (DE-588)38379-X ctb |
