SUMMARY
Conceptual boundaries of metaphysics
In this book I am discussing the origin, nature and function of
concepts playing a key role in human cognitive and volitionary
activities, in traditional metaphysics called transcendentals (they
include: being, essence, unity, plurality, truth and goodness). Due to the
fact that we use them spontaneously, automatically, without deeper
thinking or reflection, they seem to us to be both transparent and
obvious.
Detailed historical and analytical research allowed to reconstruct
two dominating tendencies present within the classical philosophical
discourse.
So,
it appears that metaphysics, even in the least developed
form, has a few mutually non-reductable conceptual schemes. In the
1 Chapter I am presenting the way in which these schemes became
differentiated. The research area covered pre-Socratean theories
as well as Platonian and Aristotelian ones. In the last of the men
tioned ones the distinguishing of the boundary concepts scheme
(which included first of all being, truth, unity and goodness) became
a foundation of the mature form o f metaphysical speculation, the
subject correlate of which was so defined as to cover all forms of
being, irrespectively of genre-type classification.
Although the second tendency appeared already in Plato's
and Aristotles doctrines, it was only in the Middle Ages when
the thesis was formed that between boundary concepts there are
numerous relations of logical and semantic nature. The theories of
transcendentals, at first being an attempt to answer the question on
how to understand the co-presence of evil in the world and how to
reconcile this fact with the existence of the goodness of God, with
334
SUMMARY
time become an autonomous philosophical metatheoretical tool with
the help of which attempts to describe basic cognitive and volitional
practices were undertaken. In the 3 Chapter I am reconstructing
the development of the transcendentals doctrine, with special
attention paid to the concept by Thomas Aquinas. At the same time,
I am defending a thesis that transcendentals, mainly in Aquinas
concept, for the first time play slightly different heuristic function
than in the case of his predecessors; they are, generally speaking,
closely connected with the characteristics of the mind, secondly with
objectivistically-oriented considerations on the nature of things.
The considerations presented in Chapters 1 and 3 aim not only
at the reconstruction of a historical process of boundary concepts
scheme creation. Mostly, it is about the distinguishing of systematic
theses which could be the subject of a detailed analysis in the further
part of the book. Basic theses include: (1) boundary concepts scheme
is organised around the concept of being; (2) boundary concepts are
interconnected as a compact concept set, particular components of
which have the same or similar features; (3) boundary concepts in
their essence are not subject to standard characteristics related to
concepts (thus, I decided to replace the notion of “transcendentals”
slightly worn out by traditional metaphysics with the notion of
“boundary concepts”); (4) boundary concepts as parts of sentence
structures appear usually as the, second levels concepts and that
is the reason why they seem to be totally transparent, thus, not
functional; (5) boundary concepts play a mixed constitutive and
descriptive function; the constitutive function i.e. such function
which determines the relation to the world, forming beliefs on it and
making acts of judgement is dominant here; (6) due to the function
mentioned, the boundary concepts appear to be also transcendental
ones i.e. formally conditioning all cognitive processes.
A detailed and multi-aspects analysis of the concept of being
on the basis of different philosophical doctrines is presented in
Chapter 2. In this chapter I focus my attention on indicating that
the basic component of each theory of being is drawing attention
to the fact that the concept of being is the boundary of conceptual
reduction. This bears some consequences for the whole scope of
S UM MA R Y
335
considerations on the issue of boundary concepts. Firstly, it allows
to look at boundary concepts as fu n d a m e n t a l and u ltim a te , when we
speak about the decomposition process of the conceptual appara
tus we posses. Secondly, it presents boundary concepts as a durable,
necessary and the most stable conceptual structure. Its abatement,
change or omission is impossible. Thirdly, the understanding o f the
remaining concepts of the boundary concept scheme depends on the
understanding o f the concept o f being. The three above-mentioned
consequences appear to be especially interesting in the context o f so-called non-classical theories of being, which include analytical ones.
In spite of significant differences in the sphere o f theoretical
determinations related to the question on the nature o f being and its
concept, some stable and unchanging properties remain intact, thus,
the thesis on the conceptual unity within boundary concepts scheme
the research o f which I undertake in Chapter 4 becomes confirmed.
Relations between boundary concepts create a complicated network
of relationships, most of all o f logical and semantic nature. The most
primitive form of such relationship is co-extensionality expressed in
traditional metaphysics with the use o f the thesis on convertibility.
According to this thesis, boundary concepts have the same range but
they differ in contents. Another, more advanced form o f relationship
is co-existence in the processes o f apprehending the object, acts
of cognition; the presence of boundary concepts is, however, not
ascertained in any of particular acts of judgement, directly aimed
at an object, it is reflection which brings them out. This leads to the
most interesting form o f coexistence, namely relations formulating
a set o f second levels concepts.
Conclusions from Chapter 4 had a decisive effect on the
character o f Chapters 5 and 6. In the first one I am asking a question
on the nature o f boundary concepts, considering first o f all the
fact that the considerations so far revealed a kind o f dichotomy in
relation to the concepts we use. The point is that boundary concepts
are strongly differentiated f~om genre-type concepts (so-called
universals), as far as both logical features and functions played in
the process o f cognition are concerned. Taking into concern the
above, the consideration o f the nature o f boundary concepts seemed
336
S UMMARY
to be an urgent case. The discussion on the nature of concepts in
contemporary philosophy is very wide and multi-thread. Thus,
I decided to take the simplest, and, as I hope, the most effective step:
I discussed boundary concepts at the background o f a few key concept
theories, including the standard (classical) theory, the atomist theory
and the prototype theory. In each case boundary concepts did not
fulfil the determinants for concepts in given theories. In traditional
metaphysics it is sometimes said that boundary concepts are some,
hidden types o f judgements. In Chapter 5 I referred also to this
concept, claiming that it is not a very convincing solution, however,
it is not without some advantages, although one should rather say
that names m eaning boundary concepts are correlated with some
types o f judgements.
Chapter 5 was in fact a negation o f a typical way o f thinking
about boundary concepts as about p a r e x c e lle n c e concepts. As their
nature cannot be directly defined, it would be best to do it by taking
a close look at the roles they play. The last, 6 Chapter is devoted to
this issue. In philosophical tradition, especially o f Kantian origin
the concept o f category as “equipment” o f m ind played a significant
role. It is interesting that Kant was aware o f the fact that medieval
metaphysics used some type o f conceptual scheme (transcendentals)
which could be considered as such equipment o f mind, but, in his
opinion, it insisted that it is a set o f concepts describing an object as
it really is. K ants diagnosis is, unfortunately, wrong. It was Thomas
who accepted the theory, but he did not develop it fully; according to
this theory, boundary concepts are “as i f ” inborn seeds o f knowledge
(Latin ra tio n es s e m in a le s ). The expression “as i f ” used in this case
is to suggest that it is a comparison and not identification. These
two stands allowed me to bring forward the “basic furniture of

scheme, basic facts from cognitive and volitionary life. Due to my
hypothesis the discussion in Chapter 6 is focused around three
possible interpretations o f boundary concepts: (1) as referring to
fundamental acts o f mind; (2) as referring to fundamental beliefs, and
(3) as referring to fundamental propositional functions. In all three
cases I try to dem onstrate that boundary concepts condition par-

ticular acts of mind (that is why I call them functional acts in order
to underline their necessity and universality), formally determ ine
a set o f beliefs on the world and, finally, they are a structural and at
the same time indispensable basis o f all judgements.
And finally: Someone could ask a fully justified question: So what s
there for us if we more or less understood what boundary concepts
are and how they work within our mind? The answer goes without
saying. Analyses included in the book provide possible variants o f
escape from trivialisation, instrumentalisation and marginalisation
o f metaphysical issues. These analyses lead to the conclusion that
boundary concepts are the central conceptual scheme o f each area
o f philosophical thought, and, successively, of each area w hich is
a result o f knowledge-forming activities o f our mind.
