A HISTORY OF THE IZIKO
AFRICAN NATIONAL GALLERY
What ‘belongs’ in a public art museum or gallery? How does a
national gallery understand its relationship to the nation and the
nation’s art? And whose art is it reflecting?
In this, the first full history of South Africa’s national gallery,
Anna Tietze considers the changing ways in which this institution
has understood its social function, from its modest beginnings in
the 1870s, through the apartheid years, and into its postcoionial
present as part of an amalgamated Iziko Museums of South Africa.
She also explores its relationship to other public collections,
and the consequences this has had for its collecting and
exhibition practices.
Scholarly and detailed, this history provides an in-depth study of the
Iziko South African National Gallery. It documents the challenges
the institution has encountered in the past and those it faces in the
present, and examines possibilities for the future. It is a valuable
text for museologists and historians of public art collecting, as well
as an absorbing account of the institution’s history to be enjoyed by
a general readership interested in art and South African history.
Anna Tietze is a cultural and art historian at the Michaelis
School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. She has had a long-
standing connection with the Iziko South African National Gallery,
as both researcher and curator.
