SUMMARY
Tahafut al-Falasifa is a large work against philosophers, the
most important and famous work of Al-Gazali, work against
Greek and Greek-Hellenistic philosophical tradition in Islam;
firstly against Aristotle, Muftazilit’s school, Al-Kindi, Al-Farabi
and Ibn Sina. The idea of divinity, relation between God and
world, eternity of the soul, three main issues — opinions of the pe-
ripatetic Aristotle’s philosophy, were established on the contrary
of Islam schooling. It is a background, i.e. the origin and reason
of Al-Gazali’s radical criticism of philosophy. The opinions and
understanding in which. Al-Gazali refuses to recognize the opi-
nions of the Arabic-Islamic philosophers (falasifa), as “Islamic
Aristotelianism” as well as some representatives of the specula-
tive dialectic (mutakallimun), are the most important issues of
the entire scholastic philosophy: eternity or transitoriness of the
world, eternity of the soul, disputing the God’s knowledge about
particularity, disputing the corporal experiencing, issues about
God’s names and attributes, disputing the causality principle.
Tahafut at-Tahafut is also very famous and comprehensive
answer of Ibn-Rusd to Al-Gazali’s Tahatut al-Falasifa. A philo-
sopher from Cordoba found that his primary task was to defend
philosophers from the strong criticism of the Islamic lowers
(fuqaha) and theologians (mutakallimun), especially after Al-
Gazali’s accusing. For Ibn Rusd, philosophy from the very be-
ginning, is a Greek philosophy, i.e. Aristotle’s philosophy. From
his point of view he aimed at philosophy defense in order to
demonstrate that Al-Gazali is less consistent then philosophers
in his opinion, establishing and inferring his argumentation vi-
ews and opinions as well as to demonstrate that his proofs and
statements are less coherent and founded.

Ibn Rusd’s intention was to explain the things which were
brought by Revelation and Islamic contemplative tradition thro-
ugh Al-Gazali, using rational natural reasons of the philosopher
However, he neither subordinated philosophy to religion like Al-
Gazali (and Tomo Akvinski) nor separated the former from the
latter like Christian scholasticism (W. Ockham, Duns Skot); but
he joined them.
Ibn Rusd defends philosophy and justifies metaphysics co-
ordinating it with the (Islamic) religion. It seems that the ecc-
lesiastic character of Christian religion prevented to perform
it in ‘Latin Rusdism’ and the possible starting point of misun-
derstanding about Ibn Rusd in the West (dispute about one or
two truths) may be found. The term of metaphysics as well as
the term of nature thus will be re-interpreted. Revealed religion
deducing to the limits of human mind on the one hand, and on
the other hand acceptance of the strong causality principle are
the most important consequences of Ibn Rusd’s point of view
to philosophical-cultural history of both Muslim East and Chri-
stian West.
We can conclude that the treated issues in these two works
as well as their authors are expressing the main characteristics
of Arabic-Islamic mediaeval philosophy in whole: a) that it is
spiritual-religious philosophy b) that it is traditional philosophy
c) that it is “philosophy of harmony” between Arabic-Islamic
philosophers, between Platon and Aristotle, between religion
and philosophy, between ratio and revelation and finally d) that
it is, firmly connected to the science having a large influence to
appearance of the European Renaissance and to development of
the West-European philosophy.
Two Tahafuts, Al-Gazali’s and Ibn Rusd’s are expressing the
key issues and problems of Arabic-Islamic philosophy and sci-
ence in the Middle Ages and mediaeval philosophy, generally.
They are giving the fundamental ideas of Arabic-Islamic culture
and civilization during XI-V(H) and XII-VI (H) century.

Some of them, although they have only historical worth
nowdays, were the most important for their time.
All these give directions for possibility or necessity to find
at least a new way of reading and writing the general histories
of philosophy.
