English summary
Pioneer of Air Transport Josef Sedlár (1898-1930)
The book first looks at the creation of a regular state air transport service in
Czechoslovakia in the 1920s, focusing on the participation of the Ministry of Defence in
the establishment and organization of the Prague-Bratislava air transport route. At the
beginning of 1923, on the basis of the negotiations of the concerned ministers, the
establishment of a regular Prague-Bratislava airmail route was announced. The possibility
of a regular two-way connection between Prague and Bratislava was confirmed during
trial flights in March (see table on pages 13-14) and April 1923 (see table on pages 17 -
18), with Aero A-14 aircraft and Letov S-l/S-2 aircraft. Pilots for state air transport were
selected from experienced flight officers (see tables on pages 21 and 22). Aviation Transport
Flight within the 1st Aviation Regiment, which included necessary aviation personnel as
well as transport aircraft Aero A-10 and Aero A-14, was formed in August 1923 to provide
transportation flights (see table on page 23). The formation of the Aviation Transport Flight
took place at the time when the airmail in Czechoslovak territory underwent further regular
operations thanks to the President of Czechoslovakia taking a holiday in the summer
residence in Slovakia in August and September 1923 (see table on page 25). Czechoslovak
State Airlines (CSA) was officially established on 6 October 1923, but actually, the first
CSA transportation flight with passengers on the Prague-Bratislava route commenced on
29 October 1923. The first part of the book ends with an overview of CSA regular flights
from October to December 1923 (see table on pages 34-35).
Second part of the book tells the life story of one of the CSA’s first pilots. Josef Sedlar
was bom on 31 January 1898 in the small village of Zeraviny (house number 21), in the
County of Hodonin in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The third of four sons of the
miller’s family, he completed primary school and primary town school in Uhersky Ostroh
becoming a locksmith and eventually working in Vienna. In 1916, he was drafted into the
Austro-Hungarian army to the 3rd Infantry Regiment in Brno, from where he was deployed,
with his regiment to the Russian, and later to the Italian, battlefields. After the end of Great
War, he returned to his new home - the independent Czechoslovakia. He was drafted again,
now to the “Slovacko” brigade in Hodonin that was formed as a response to efforts of
south Moravian Germans to annex South Moravia to Austria. In January 1920, he was
transferred to the 2nd Aviation Regiment in Olomouc, where he passed the course for
aviation mechanics. As a mechanic he served for short time with the 3rd Aviation Regiment
in Bratislava from June 1920. In September 1920, he was sent to military aviation centre in
Cheb for pilot training. After completing elementary pilot training mainly with Hansa-

Brandenburg aircraft and advanced two-seater aircraft course with Letov S-l/S-2 and
Salmson 2 aircraft (see table on page 43), he was posted to the 1st Aviation Regiment in
Prague in July 1922. Here, in addition to the regular flight operations mainly with the
Letov S-l and S-2 aircraft (see table on page 52), he won the prize for two-seater aircraft
category in Presidential Cup Speed Race in July 1923 (see table on page 51). As one of the
proposed pilots for air transport, he participated in the trial flights on the Prague-Bratislava

route in March and April 1923. He was finally posted to the Aviation Transport Flight in
August 1923.
The aviation career of Josef Sedlar is inseparable from the development of civil air
transport in Czechoslovakia, which, in early years until September 1924, are possible to
follow from his second pilot logbook (see table on page 55). Despite the limited transport
capacity and passenger comfort, the Aero A-14 aircraft carried the bulk of the work in
1924 and 1925 on the Prague-Bratislava route, which was extended in mid 1924 to Kosice.
The use of the Aero A-10 transport limousines was marginal because they were withdrawn
from the CSA service after a few months of limited operations. The purchase of modem
Aero DH-50 and Letov S-19 aircraft in 1925 did not significantly improve the operations
of CSA because these were originally bomber aircraft adapted for air transport roles and
suffered initial technical problems. The only Junkers F-13 aircraft was acquired but probably
did not see regular CSA operations and served only for test and sightseeing flights,
respectively, and were later reported as a reserve for the Prague-Marianske Lazne route. It
was in 1926 that the Aero DH-50 aircraft advanced to the leading position in the number of
flights within the CSA fleet. This year, Bmo was also included in the CSA route network.
CSA operated the same types of aircraft in 1927 but there was a double increase in flights
and also the seasonal route Prague-Marianske Lazne was taken over from the Aero company
(see table on page 59). The cmcial year of CSA operations was 1928 when new aircraft of
the second generation Aero A-23 aircraft, together with obsolete Farman F.62 aircraft,
were put into CSA service; these aircraft were supported by proven Aero DH-50 aircraft,
and eventually Uzhorod was included in the CSA route network. In the following year, the
CSA fleet and the route network did not change, while a year later there were significant
changes. In 1930, the CSA fleet included the new Aero A-38 and Aero A-35 aircraft, and
third-generation Ford Trimotor and Fokker F-VIIb-3m aircraft. The Farman F.62 and Aero
DH-50 aircraft were still used for cargo transport. CSA also opened its first international
route Prague-Zagreb during that year (see table on page 60). Josef Sedlar’s aviation career
with CSA, after the closing his second pilot logbook, can be approximately reconstructed
on the preserved fragments of “logbooks” of Prague-Kbely airport (see table on page 65).
The second part of the book is closed with an overview of Josef Sedlar’s aviation incidents
(see table on page 79).
As one of the trio of the most experienced CSA pilots, Josef Sedlar was given the
opportunity to fly the only Ford Trimotor in CSA service, including the first flight on the
CSA route. The future CSA Ford 5-AT-C, serial number 50, was manufactured in June of
1929 in Dearborn Michigan (USA), and was registered as NC 8412 by the US civil aviation
authority. Ford Motor Company displayed NC 8412 at the Olympia Show in London in
July 1929 with Ford Motor Company test pilot Leroy “Roy” Manning, who also
demonstrated NC 8412 in 21 countries between July and October 1929. The preliminary
negotiations for the purchase of NC 8412 for CSA were held during its first visit in Prague
on 27th September, and the final deal was made before the second visit of NC 8412 in
Prague on 21 st October. Several successful test trials by the new owner followed the delivery
in October 1929, and regular operation started in May 1930. The aircraft was re-registered
as OK-FOR by the Czechoslovak civil aviation authority, and its first CSA flight on the
Prague-Bmo-Bratislava route took place on 17 May 1930 with 11 passengers and 64 kg of
cargo on board. The OK-FOR aircraft in CSA service flew a total of 41 flights transporting

385 regular and 12 service passengers. Josef Sedlar piloted OK-FOR in the CSA service
17 times. Unfortunately, his last Ford Trimotor flight on 22 August 1930, was his last flight
ever, OK-FOR crashed in a thunderstorm in Bedrichov (Friedrichsdorf), near Jihlava (Iglau),
when flying on the regular route from Prague to Bratislava. Twelve persons including pilot
Josef Sedlar, and mechanic Josef Trafina, were killed. The catastrophe had a great response
in the newspapers because it was the biggest aircraft accident in Czechoslovakia before
World War II. One of the first CSA pilots, who flew 3000 flight hours and nearly 300,000
kilometres, passed away in the person of Josef Sedlar. The last part of the book is devoted
to this modem airplane, which left a significant trace in the Czechoslovak sky despite its
limited three-month CSA service. Notably, CSA entered the world of international transport
with Ford Trimotor on the route Prague-Zagreb. There are comprehensively presented events
that followed the introduction the Ford Trimotor aircraft into the CSA service, list of all the
scheduled flights on the Prague-Brno-Bratislava route (see table on pages 118-119), and
the authentically documented fatal accident near Jihlava.
