List of Recordings
A former list of recordings of Transylvanian village bands thought to be near
complete has had to be abandoned as the number of CDs issued has greatly
increased since, and the number of village bands known to exist has increased
with them, especially on the Romanian side of things. This is now a list of
recordings recommended for authenticity and relevance, some of which might
still be available in five years’ time.
Series Specialised Labels
Új Pátria. A series of 18 CDs issued by Fonó, Budapest, principally of Transyl-
vanian village bands. The musicians were invited to Fonó headquarters during
1998-9, where their complete repertoires were recorded for archiving, and a
selection issued as a commercial CD. Those which were not village bands were
mostly groups of singers and flautists. The best-known bands with commercially
published CDs — Magyarpalatka, ‘Neti Vajdaszentivány... — are not included,
and Szászcsávás only with an “older stratum” band. Recently another fifty CDs
have been added, but these are not available separately except, apparently, in one
shop in Budapest. This extended programme embraces musicians from other
countries, especially Slovakia, but is focussed on ethnic Hungarians. Two or
three complete tracks from each CD used to be accessible on the Fonó website,
but it seems to have migrated.
Consilior Judeţean Cluj. This cultural institution has issued some 40 CDs of
“traditional” music from the administrative district of Cluj (which is extensive),
the majority being muziek populara of one kind or another, but including at
present a dozen village bands in the old style, many of them previously unrecorded
and ‘hidden behind the dominance of Hungarian research. Among these are two
different bands from Soporul de Câmpie, neither of them ‘Şandorica’s, both of
which also accompany the singer Vasile Soporan. There are also two bands well
known to the Hungarians but recorded under their Romanian names — Sic and
Pala tea. There is no commercial distribution, but all CDs can be heard complete
on the website http://traditficlujene.ro/index.php. There is an ordering tab on

the site which seems to have no effect and the CDs are mainly given to other
institutions and interested persons, including, in our experience, people who
knock on the door of the office in Cluj.
Kallós Archivům. Recordings made by Transylvanian ethnomusicologist Zoltán
Kallós, issued in the early 1990s in a series of cassettes. Several have been re*
edited and issued by Fonó as CDs: Bonchida-Válaszút, Feketetelak, Magyarlóna,
Mezokeszii, Visa, Ördöngösfüzes (1999-2002). There is also a CD of the
Magyarpalatka band and (separately) three singers from Kallós Archivům.
CDs from Fekete Antals field recordings of instrumental ensembles in action
on social occasions, usually weddings, in the late 1970s to early 1980s are being
issued by Folk Europa (Budapest) as a series. So far: Magyarpalatka Band (two),
Szóvidék, Gernyszeg, Magyarpéterlaka, Vjdazentivány and Ádámos bands, and
a gathering of Kalotaszegi musicians for a wedding at Méra.
Ethnophonié based at the Romanian Village Museum, Bucharest, and edited
by the ethnomusicologist Speranţa Rădulescu, has issued the only commercially
available Romanian collection of CDs in this field, including many “Taraf” or
“Lăutărească” bands still operative in eastern and southern Romania, and music
from Maramureş (two of Ion Pops “Iza”group), Codru, Emil Mihais band from
Gherla and the singer Vasile Soporan with the Soporul de Câmpie Band.
Netwerke Hongaarse Volkmuziek (Holland). CDs issued around 2000, studio
recordings of the bands from Erdöszombattelke, Méra (two), Magyarpalatka and
Vaj dasszent ivány.
Néptáncosok Szakmai Háza (Budapest) issued a series of undated cassettes
by both village and táncház musicians for purposes of study and instrumental
practice in connection with printed transcriptions. Ive seen no listing of these.
Musician-issued CDs. Bands (or their aficionados) have started issuing CDs
since they found themselves in demand beyond the villages. These are home-
made CDRs and can be of very dubious quality or durability, but seem to be
improving. They can normally only be got directly from the band. Mociu Band
has issued one, Magyarpalatka about six. Four professionally produced and
distributed CDs of the Szászcsávás Band have been issued independently of
labels but not by the band itself. There are two CDs without label name of
the Vajaszentivány band accompanying singing. At least two CDs of the singer
Grigore Leşe from Lapuş are also independently issued for the local market. My
copies rotted after five years.
Individual Bands Musicians (Transylvania)
Here I only indicate which musicians have had CDs issued and on which labeU
excluding those mentioned above. These are all “authentic ” village-based musicians
insofar as such a distinction is possible, with emphasis on those I have paid special
attention to for Dawn Songs. Some (especially “Neti*) are sometimes accompanied
183
by táncház (urban revival) musicians, usually from Budapest. Village names are
given in the language used on the labeling of the recordings.
Bonchida (Mezöség). There were several cassettes of the old Hungarian
band from Kallós Archívum, and one CD from Fonó (Budapest). The
distinctive music from here is imitated on CDs by Téka, Ökrös and Méta
táncház groups.
Búza (Mezöség) and region. The “developed” band from here, known as
Eszterláncs, led by Alexandru Ripa and with two or three singers, has
four CDs, from Fonó and independently.
The violinist Emil Mihai was originally from Búza. His trio has two CDs
from Ethnophonie (Bucharest).
Bogartelke (Kalotaszeg). János Czilikas band, recorded 1993. Double CD
from Hagyományok Háza (Budapest).
Csípi Band (István Varga, Rudolf Toni, Victor Berki): Kalotaszegi Nepzene.
CD issued by the band for sale at performances, undated.
Hodac (Mezöség). Recordings accompanying Paul Nixons book “Sociality
Music Dance”.
Tcha Limberger’s Kalotaszegi Trio: A hajnali csillagé ragyok. Lejazzetal 2009
Magyarbece (Nagyenyed / Aiud). Ferenc Kulcsár s band, recorded 1993.
Hagyományok Háza (Budapest). Also the violinist and flautist Ferenc
Szántó accompanied by Téka (Téka/Fonó).
Magyarszovát (Mezöség). Márton Maneszes band with singers, recorded 1997.
Double CD from Fonó.
Mociu (Mezöség) as “Stingaciu” [left-handed] Band. Lost Trails (U.S.A.).
Magyarpalatka (Mezöség) The band in two generations, under Martón then
Florin Kodoba. Hungaraton and Fonó.
Méra (Kalotaszeg). Sándor Fodor (“Netti”or “Neti”) solo, with his own band
or with Budapest musicians: 4 CDs, from Hungaroton, Fonó and ABT
Records (all Budapest).
Soporul de Cimpie. (Mezöség). Band under Sandoricá Ciurcui. Buda (France),
1992. Several cassettes for the local market.
Szászcsávás (Kis-Küküllö). In addition to the four independently-issued CDs,
there is one from Figurás (Switzerland) 1998.
Szék (Mezöség). Ádám Istváns band and singers, recorded 1969—1973. Fonó.
Tűre (Kalotaszeg) László Lengyel Türei (singer with local instrumentalists).
Harmónia Produkció 2000.

labels and sometimes independently produced. The following are items of special
regard for this thesis.

Video Film

Neti Sanyi (Fodor Sámuel “Neti”): Muzsikusportrét. A film by Béla Halmos
and György Szomjas. Goëssfilm, Budapest, 2000.
Around 2007 all this issuing of recordings of Transylvanian village music sud-
denly stopped in both countries. This coincided with Romania’s entry into the
EU which may have been relevant, but why this should put a halt to activities in
Budapest I can’t imagine. An ever increasing amount of material can be viewed
on YouTube, including both archival and contemporary performances and some
particularly valuable footage of the bands in action accompanying dancers, in
both public and domestic settings. I haven’t located there or anywhere a film of
a traditional dawn songs event.
