Summary
“The Jewish community in Staszów between 1918-1939” is a mono-
graph presenting Jewish history in a small town in the south-
-eastem of the Second Polish Republic· It shows the problems that
the Jewish community in the town had to solve living mainly from
trade, crafts and poorly developed industry.
In the interwar period Staszów was inhabited by Poles and
Jews. According to the first post-war population census held in
1921 the entire population of Staszów amounted to 8357, includ-
ing 3629 Poles (43,4 per cent) and 4704 Jews (56,3 per cent). 9706
people lived in Staszów in 1939 - 4603 Poles (47,4 per cent) and 5103
Jews (52,6 per cent).
The Jewish community was strictly connected with Staszów
life remaining all the time its ethnic and cultural differences. The
first chapter examines the demography and occupations of the
towns Jewish community, professional unions and financial insti-
tutions. The second chapter describes political a social life with
various organizations and associations, education and participa-
tion in parliamentary and local government elections. The third
chapter concerns the legal and economic basis to the functioning

of Jewish community and the main spheres of their activity. The
fourth chapter deals with education, sports and cultural organi-
zations.
Most Jews worked in trade and crafts in Staszów. In the 1930 s
there were 279 Jewish tradesmen and 262 Jews were the owners
of craft workshops in Staszów. Dozens of Jews had small business-
es. A very small number of Jews belonged to the intelligentsia. In
the first post-war years the economic situation of Poland was dif-
ficult because of war destruction, inflation and a big pauperization.
An improvement took place in the 1925-1929 years. The economic
crisis of 1929-1935 was accompanied by an economic boycott of
Jewish goods, inspired by the National Democrats. The sanacja
government used administrative measures to weaken Jewish com-
merce. All the time Jews had to face competence from the part of
Poles. The anti-Semitism of this period had mainly a socio-eco-
nomic origin.
Struggling with economic problems the Jewish community
was very active and capable of self-organization of collective life
as reflected by a number of organizations and associations both
cultural, educational, sports, etc. They integrated various social
groups of the Jewish population. As in other cities in Poland, where
the Jewish community lived, they were places where developed
their social life. The cultural life flourished fully and contribut-
ed to the intellectual development of the Jewish community. The
most important cultural and sport organizations included the Cul-
ture-League, the Perec Library, the Society of Evening Courses for
Workers, the Association of Physical Education “Gwiazda-Sztem”,
and the sports club “Hakoah”.
Political life of the Jewish community in Staszów also de-
veloped very well. All the main political parties operating in Poland

with different programs on the existing Jewish population had
their branches in Staszów. These included: the Orthodox Agudas
Isroel (known as “Aguda”), the Organization of General Zionists,
Union of Revisionist Zionists, the Organization of Orthodox Zio-
nists "Mizrachi”, Poalej Syjon right wing, socialist Poalej Syjon
left wing, the socio—democratic "Bund” and the Communist Par-
ty of Poland.
The Jewish kahal, religious community, in Staszów was
a self-government institution, which integrated all the Jews and
maintained the national consciousness. The scope of aid depended
on the financial resources that were available to the community
board. Unfortunately, they were limited because of not very well-
-run financial management of the Jewish community by the board
as evidenced by preserved budgets. However, social and charita-
ble work was carried out by organizations established for that pur-
pose, eg. Linas Hacedek.
A number of well-known musicians came from Staszów -
Abram Szerman, Pinczes Szerman, Motel Goldfarb, Izrael Wajc-
man, Joske Dizenhauz I Irachmiel. Jesekiel Dawid Kirszenbaum,
world-famous painter was born and lived in Staszów at that time
before he went to Berlin and Paris.
