Ethnic Revival and Local Belonging in the Satu Mare Region
SUMMARY
The monograph explores the reasons for the identity crisis, which emerged with-
in the Swabian community in the Satu Mare region at the turn of the new mil-
lennium. It also investigates by what cultural means the community has tried to
meet this challenge and what individual and collective strategies have been de-
veloped to preserve ethnic identity. Thus, the research intends to offer an analy-
sis of the present-day ethnic characteristics and the folk culture of the Swabian
community. Based on the insights of this analysis, the monograph concludes
with a comprehensive discussion of the social and cultural phenomena, which
determine the local identity of the Swabian community and impact group organi-
zation on the local and ethnic level. The research identifies the various events
and phenomena which have resulted in substantial social and cultural changes
within the local community. Such events include for instance the settlement of
Swabian people in Mezőpetri (.Vetrepi), changes of names at the turn of century
or the deportation after WW2.
At the end of the 20th century, these transitions coupled with a massive mi-
gration to Germany have created the fear that the community might cease to ex-
ist. As a consequence, over the past few decades new social practices have
evolved which deliver an excellent example of how similar minority groups strive
to protect their traditions. This collective effort which these groups make to pre-
serve their identity is commonly labeled as ethnic revival.
The observations relate to several Swabian settlements in Romania, within
the period between 2003 and the present day. From 1712 on, thirty-one Swabian
settlements were established on the territory of the former S^atmár County. Out
of these, the analysis primarily focuses on Mezopetri and analyzes how Swabian
identity transformed here over time. However, some attention is paid to neigh-
boring settlements as well, including villages and towns such as Kisdengeleg
(Dindestiu Mict), Mezőfény (Főiem), Mezőterem (Tireatri), Kaplony (Copient),
Kálmánd (Câmin), Nagykároly (Caret), Csanálos (Urecent). In some subchapters,
the research even provides examples from some remote Swabian settlements.
In this sense, the project follows a line of ethnographic research which is
grounded on methodological nationalism. Relying on terms such as individual,
community and identity, the monograph considers questions about the cultural

changes of immigrant groups and about assimilation and strategies of preserving
cultural traditions. The focus is also on how generations relate to their “original”
or traditional cultural heritage and how they integrate the cultural characteristics
of the host community into their own ethnic identity. In particular, this investiga-
tion pays special attention to the forms of representation which mark ethnicity
and cultural difference.
The research results raise further questions about how these representations
of ethnicity and local identity are culturally reproduced or how local ties and reli-
gious denominations come into play. Changes of identity are subject to all those
impacts which individuals experience. Due to the fact that these changes take
place in a different way over the course of time and people were exposed to dif-
ferent impulses 300 years ago than at the turn of the millennium, it was necessary
to rely on the methodology of transnational ethnography as well. In this case, the
transitions under scrutiny do not only pertain to the present or the recent past.
Instead, they are multilayered and comprehensive processes which may take
place in various social dimensions and may have an unequal speed. This mono-
graph discusses not only classical strategies of representation or common histori-
cal, social and cultural features but it also scrutinizes modem forms of identity
construction such as regional online newspapers, websites or local institutions
and initiatives.
