How we have constructed our
minds - English summary
What is a thought? This chapter opens our investi-
gation into the nature of mind by first querying
the nature of the mind’s most familiar inhabitants:
thoughts. Finding that introspective investigati-
ons of the nature of thoughts inevitably lead us to
ambiguous results, we then ask if it is feasible to
investigate thoughts not from a “first-person”, but
from a “third-person” perspective, putting thoughts
on a par with other objects of the scientific world.
But, from the “third-person” perspective there is no
direct access to our actual thoughts, and hence sci-
ence has to deal with proxies such as the workings
of our brain. We might also try to deviate from the
usual perspectives of natural science, admit that
the investigation of something so special as the hu-
man mind requires special methods, such as those
sometimes employed in the humanities, and perha-
ps accept that thoughts are basically the products
of a process of interpretation. Thus we have two
options: either we consider thoughts as something
like processes in the brain, whereby we completely
abolish all our intuitions regarding their nature,
or we consider them as products of interpreta-
tion, whereby we declare them as purely fictional
objects. As neither alternative is overly attractive,
it would seem worthwhile to delve deeper into the
nature of mind.
158
Introspection. This chapter returns to the in-
tuition that we have direct, “first-person” access
to our minds, which are also reliable sources for
knowledge of mind s nature. Using case studies
from the literature, it is argued that this persis-
tent intuition is only illusory, and that not only
are our convictions that we know our own minds
mistaken, but the whole idea of knowledge of one’s
own mind is problematic. The key moral to be dra-
wn from these considerations is that introspection
should be excluded from the sources of knowledge
regarding our minds.
Behaviorism and the cognitive revolution.
This chapter illustrates the perplexities of the stu-
dy of mind using the historical example of the rise
and fall of behaviorism within twentieth century
psychology and philosophy of mind. The usual
story is that behaviorism imposed such crazy re-
strictions upon any study of mind that it was
deservedly wiped out by the so-called cognitive re-
volution, which re-opened our access to the “black
box” of mind. I argue that, though there is some
truth in this, it underestimates the prophylactic
aspect of behaviorism, stemming from its effort to
block our access to what can be called “magical”
theories of mind. From this viewpoint, the cogni-
tive revolution may also be seen as a counter-revo-
lution, re-opening the gates to some irresponsible
philosophizing about the mind.
How we (probably) constructed our mind.
This chapter returns to the dilemma posed in the
first chapter, namely the dilemma of either seeing
159
the mind as the working of the brain, thus aban-
doning all our intuitions regarding it, or seeing it
as a product of interpretation, thus abandoning
its reality. The case is argued ,using Wilfrid Sellars’
so-called “Myth of Jones”, for a third possibility,
which will emerge if we pay due attention to the
historical and social aspects of our human grasp-
ing of mind. The point is that what may start as
a construct of interpretation might be turned, by
historical development, into a kind of reality. Thus
the human mind is both “socially constructed” (i.e.
it is a product of myriads of mutual interpreta-
tions) and real (for many real things among which
we live our lives are products of such historical-so-
cial institutions).
Thought and rules. This chapter turns atten-
tion to the specific nature of human mind. It is
argued that our thought can usefully be charac-
terized as “conceptual”, not, however, in the Lock-
ean sense of concepts as general ideas, but in the
Kantian sense of concepts as essential constituents
of propositions. From this viewpoint, the human
mind is basically a mind trafficking in proposi-
tions. It is further argued that as propositions are
essentially corelates of assertions, the specifically
human mind is inseparably connected with lan-
guage and, most particularly, with what can be
called the “game of giving and asking for reasons”.
