Zusammenfassung: | It is a little known fact that as early as the thirteenth century, Europe's political and religious powers tried to physically mark and distinguish the Jews from the rest of society. During the Renaissance, Italian Jews first had to wear a yellow round badge on their chest, and then later, a yellow beret. The discriminatory marks were a widespread phenomenon with serious consequences for Jewish communities and their relations with Christians. Beginning with a sartorial study - how the Jews were marked on their clothing and what these marks meant - the book offers an in-depth analysis of anti-Jewish discrimination across three Italian city-states: Milan, Genoa, and Piedmont. Moving beyond Italy, it also examines the place of Jews and Jewry law in the increasingly interconnected world of Early Modern European politics |

Origins and symbolic meaning of the Jewish badge; 2. Dukes, friars and Jews in fifteenth-century Milan; 3. Strangers at home: the Jewish badge in Spanish Milan (1512-1597); 4. From black to yellow: loss of solidarity among the Jews of Piedmont; 5. No Jews in Genoa; Conclusion It is a little known fact that as early as the thirteenth century, Europe's political and religious powers tried to physically mark and distinguish the Jews from the rest of society. Moving beyond Italy, it also examines the place of Jews and Jewry law in the increasingly interconnected world of Early Modern European politics Geschichte 1400-1500 Geschichte 1500-1600 Geschichte 1215-1600 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Juden Politik Jews / Persecutions / Italy / History / 15th century Jews / Persecutions / Italy / History / 16th century Jews / Italy / Politics and government / 15th century Jews / Italy / Politics and government / 16th century Jews / Italy / Milan / History Jews / Italy / Genoa / History Jews / Italy / Piedmont / History Clothing and dress / Symbolic aspects / Italy Judenkennzeichen (DE-588)7545792-1 gnd rswk-swf Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 gnd rswk-swf Abgrenzung (DE-588)4138430-1 gnd rswk-swf Judenstern (DE-588)1037696549 gnd rswk-swf Italien Milan (Italy) / Ethnic relations Genoa (Italy) / Ethnic relations Piedmont (Italy) / Ethnic relations Mailand (DE-588)4037100-1 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 gnd rswk-swf Piemont (DE-588)4046039-3 gnd rswk-swf Genua (DE-588)4020185-5 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 g Piemont (DE-588)4046039-3 g Mailand (DE-588)4037100-1 g Genua (DE-588)4020185-5 g Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 s Judenkennzeichen (DE-588)7545792-1 s Judenstern (DE-588)1037696549 s Abgrenzung (DE-588)4138430-1 s Geschichte 1215-1600 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, hardback 978-1-107-17543-3 (DE-604)BV044331985 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, paperback 978-1-316-62747-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316798492 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
