Zusammenfassung: | Antifascism is usually described as either a political ideology of activists and intellectuals confronting the dictatorships of Hitler and Mussolini, or as a cynical tool that justified the Stalinist expansion of communism in Europe. Andreas Agocs widens our understanding of antifascism by placing it in the context of twentieth-century movements of 'cultural renewal'. He explores the concept of 'antifascist humanism', the attempt by communist and liberal intellectuals and artists to heal the divisions of Nazism by reviving the 'other Germany' of classical Weimar. This project took intellectual shape in German exile communities in Europe and Latin America during World War II and found its institutional embodiment in the Cultural League for Democratic Renewal in Soviet-occupied Berlin in 1945. During the emerging Cold War, antifascist humanism's uneasy blend of twentieth-century mass politics and cultural nationalism became the focal point of new divisions in occupied Germany and the early German Democratic Republic. This study traces German traditions of cultural renewal from their beginnings in antifascist activism to their failure in the emerging Cold War |

Defending the "Other Germany" -- The humanist front : antifascism and culture wars, 1934-9 -- "Otra Alemanias" : antifascist humanism in the diaspora, 1939-44 -- The "other Germany" from below : antifascist committees and national renewal in 1945 -- Part II. Contesting "Other Germanies" -- Antifascism as renewal and restoration : the Cultural League for the Democratic Renewal of Germany, 1945-6 -- Humanism with a socialist face : Sovietization and "ideological coordination" of the Kulturbund, 1946-7 -- The limits of humanism : cultural renewal and the outbreak of the Cold War, 1947-8 -- Mass organization and memory : antifascist humanism in divided Germany, 1948 and beyond -- Conclusion: From the Saar to Salamis Antifascism is usually described as either a political ideology of activists and intellectuals confronting the dictatorships of Hitler and Mussolini, or as a cynical tool that justified the Stalinist expansion of communism in Europe. This study traces German traditions of cultural renewal from their beginnings in antifascist activism to their failure in the emerging Cold War Kulturbund zur Demokratischen Erneuerung Deutschlands / History Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1934-1949 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Nationalismus Politik Anti-fascist movements / Germany / History / 20th century Humanism / Political aspects / Germany / History / 20th century Exiles / Political activity / Europe / History / 20th century Exiles / Political activity / Latin America / History / 20th century Nationalism / Germany / History / 20th century Nationalsozialismus (DE-588)4041316-0 gnd rswk-swf Kulturarbeit (DE-588)4073868-1 gnd rswk-swf Antifaschismus (DE-588)4122803-0 gnd rswk-swf Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 gnd rswk-swf Exil (DE-588)4015959-0 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Europa Lateinamerika Germany / Politics and government / 1933-1945 Germany / Politics and government / 1945-1990 Germany / Cultural policy Germany / Intellectual life / 20th century Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Gebiet unter Alliierter Besatzung, Sowjetische Zone (DE-588)35102-7 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Gebiet unter Alliierter Besatzung, Westzonen (DE-588)4090736-3 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Gebiet unter Alliierter Besatzung, Westzonen (DE-588)4090736-3 g Deutschland Gebiet unter Alliierter Besatzung, Sowjetische Zone (DE-588)35102-7 g Nationalsozialismus (DE-588)4041316-0 s Exil (DE-588)4015959-0 s Antifaschismus (DE-588)4122803-0 s Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 s Kulturarbeit (DE-588)4073868-1 s Geschichte 1934-1949 z 1\p DE-604 Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, hardback 978-1-107-08543-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316084106 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
