Zusammenfassung: | Hans Baron, Karl Popper, Leo Strauss and Erich Auerbach were among the many German-speaking Jewish intellectuals who fled Continental Europe with the rise of Nazism in the 1930s. Their scholarship, though not normally considered together, is studied here to demonstrate how, despite their different disciplines and distinctive modes of working, they responded polemically in the guise of traditional scholarship to their shared trauma. For each, the political calamity of European fascism was a profound intellectual crisis, requiring an intellectual response which Weinstein and Zakai now contextualize, ideologically and politically. They exemplify just how extensively, and sometimes how subtly, 1930s and 1940s scholarship was used not only to explain, but to fight the political evils that had infected modernity, victimizing so many. An original perspective on a popular area of research, this book draws upon a mass of secondary literature to provide an innovative and valuable contribution to twentieth-century intellectual history |

spelling | Weinstein, D. (David) 1949- Verfasser aut Jewish exiles and European thought during the Third Reich, Baron, Popper, Strauss, Auerbach David Weinstein, Avihu Zakai Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2017 1 online resource (x, 307 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 17 Jul 2017) Hans Baron, Karl Popper, Leo Strauss and Erich Auerbach were among the many German-speaking Jewish intellectuals who fled Continental Europe with the rise of Nazism in the 1930s. An original perspective on a popular area of research, this book draws upon a mass of secondary literature to provide an innovative and valuable contribution to twentieth-century intellectual history Baron, Hans / 1900-1988 Popper, Karl R. / (Karl Raimund) / 1902-1994 Strauss, Leo Auerbäck, Erich Baron, Hans 1900-1988 (DE-588)116059397 gnd rswk-swf Popper, Karl R. 1902-1994 (DE-588)118595830 gnd rswk-swf Strauss, Leo 1899-1973 (DE-588)118833901 gnd rswk-swf Auerbach, Erich 1892-1957 (DE-588)118505025 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1933-1945 gnd rswk-swf Jewish philosophy / 20th century Philosophy, Modern / 20th century Jewish scholars / Germany Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 gnd rswk-swf Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 gnd rswk-swf Exil (DE-588)4015959-0 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf Baron, Hans 1900-1988 (DE-588)116059397 p Popper, Karl R. 1902-1994 (DE-588)118595830 p Strauss, Leo 1899-1973 (DE-588)118833901 p Auerbach, Erich 1892-1957 (DE-588)118505025 p Exil (DE-588)4015959-0 s DE-604 Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 s Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 s Geschichte 1933-1945 z Zakhai, Avihu 1945- Verfasser (DE-588)1055765336 aut Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, hardback 978-1-107-16646-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316711064 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
