SUMMARY
Presheva Valley is located in the northeastern part of the
Albanian ethnical territories and it respresents natural continuation of
it. Geographical and spatial continuity with Kosovo and Macedonia is
clearly distinguished in physical and geographical conditions, as well
as the entirety of historical, social, demographical, economic norms.
With South Anamorava in the west it is bordered by Karadag of
Presheva, to the east it is stretched to Mount Rujani and Kozjak, in the
north it is bordered with the Highlands of Bujanoci, while in the south,
through the lower watershed (450 m) of Presheva it is connected with
Kumanova and Skopje.
Presheva Valley has all the features of corridor since through
this region passes the most important natural corridor of the Balkan
Peninsula through the valley of Morava and Vardar. This corridor is
known as primary meridional axis of Balkan Peninsula . These
features give this area special attributes and geostrategic values. With
an area of 1.249 km2, Presheva Valley includes the municipalities of
Presheva, Bujanoci and Medvedja, where lives around 100,000
inhabitants.
It has relatively good geographical and natural basis, suitable for
an accelerated economic and social development of the region. But
besides the above facts, Presheva Valley remains one of the most
underdeveloped regions in Serbia and the entire Balkan Peninsula.
This backwardness is evident by numerous demographic, social,
economic environmental indicators by which it is categorized as area
with extreme economic and social backwardness. Backwardness is
manifested by the development of several regressive demographic,
social and environmental processes such as intensive migration and
depopulation in mountainous areas, unsustainable management of
natural resources and the negative environmental effects devastation,
unplanned development and slow social and economic transformation
of settlements, etc.

The study Nature of Presheva Valley and the results obtained
has a goal to provide completed overview of geographical and natural
basis, natural resources, and the possibilities of partial and complex
valorization of natural potential, heritage, use of natural resource and
environmental impacts. The data and results obtained will be offered
to the decision-making and planning institutions with the aim to take
measures for the revitalization and socio-economic development of
Presheva Valley due to the fact that the lack of complex research on
the natural conditions of the region and specific segments within
documents have made plans, strategies and elaborations which have
the primary objective of proposing ways and means for sustainable
and complex natural geographical basis, to lack originality and
scientific authenticity, so as such have suffered and they continue to
suffer from generalization and formality. So far, studies which should
serve as the framework in which is supported development of
municipality or region and proposing ways and methods for its
implementation, in the case of the municipalities of Presevo Valley
unfortunately fail to justify this role.
Such situation calls for raising awareness of the Albanian
academicians to take serious and scientific studies on the Presheva
Valley, led by modem scientific principles and methodology. Besides
specific and thematic studies, special importance should be given to
the preparation of complex and regional studies regarding valorisation
of the natural resources of this area with special geostrategic and
communicative importance. We believe that this study will fulfill the
demand and the need for serious scientific-geographical study
prepared by clear methodology and with a modem approach to the
study of specific issues that prove to be explained by the principle of
causality and other scientific-geographical principles.
