Résumé:
ÉCOCULTURE. NATURE DANS LA CULTURE POPULAIRE
ALBANAISE
Ce livre est un étude sur les croyances populaires et pratiques
rituelles des Albanais du Kosovo. Certainement, le domaine de rites et de
croyances est assez vaste, mais cette étude vise plus précisément à traiter
les croyances et pratiques rituelles liées à la nature.
Le livre comprend dix chapitres : 1. Introduction, où l’on présente,
tout d’abord, la spécificité de recherche sur les croyances et pratiques
rituelles, y compris les approches théoriques et méthodologiques ; 2.
Méthode du travail, qui concerne principalement le recueil des donnée ; 3.
Vers l’idée d’une écoculture, qui, outre mon itinéraire personnel et mon
intérêt pour la pensée écologique, traite des éléments de la culture
traditionnelle dans le cadre des relations entre l’homme et la nature ; 4. La
pierre comme mémoire et expérience humaine, contient des analyse d’une
pratique rituelle particulière liée à la pierre, encore bien vivante et qui
constitue un rite de passage. De même, ce chapitre contient des analyses
des symboles préhistoriques ou d’art rupestredu Kosovo, qui se trouvent
aux mêmes endroits où se déroulent les rites de passages; 5. Les cultes et
les croyances liées aux montagnes, où se trouvent présentés deux
pèlerinages aux montagnes: Lybeten et Pashtrik; 6. Le culte de l’arbre, qui
contient des données sur les arbres sacrés et les croyances liées aux
arbres ; 7. La représentation symbolique d’animal, qui traite des légendes,
les cultes et croyances, surtout sur le serpent et le coucou ; 8. Les fêtes du
renouvellement de la nature, qui contient les analyses et descriptions sur
les fêtes populaires comme la Saint-Georges et le Jour de l’Eté (Verëza) ;
9. Un éco-message dans la mythologie, qui traite la figuremythologique
albanaises, comme la Fée (Zana) ; 10. Les conclusions générales. A la fin,
figure la bibliographie utilisée dans la recherche.
L’idée principale de la thèse est l’écoculture, c est-à-dire une
réflexion plus approfondie sur la relation spirituelle entre l’home et la
nature. Afin d’expliquer cette idée, nous avons analysé certains éléments
caractéristiques de la culture traditionnelle, comme : le châtiment, la
malédiction, la bénédiction, le serment, la métamorphose, l’empathie, la
révérence, la sacralisation etc. Ces éléments culturels ne concernent pas
seulement les mœurs et pratiques morales humaines dans la vie sociale,

mais aussi bien les relations entre l ’homme et la nature. De nos jours, dans
la vie quotidienne, ces valeurs sont parfois exprimées de manière ouverte
et concrète, et parfois de manière latente et assez discrète. Dans son sens
véridique, en dehors de pensée, des symboles et des valeurs, l’écoculture
sous-entend également les comportements, les actions concrètes et les
autres routines de la vie quotidienne.
L’une des conclusions de cette thèse est que les mouvements
écologiques au Kosovo, surtout ceux qui prétendent créer une culture
environnementale ou bien une conscience écologiques, afin de changer des
comportements et des habitudes par rapport à l’environnement, doivent
prendre pour référence I’écoculture traditionnelle albanaise, parce qu’on
y trouve beaucoup d’éléments communs avec des éthiques
environnementales contemporaines, comme : l’écologie profonde, l’éco-
féminisme, le spiritualisme écologique, la dark-green religion etc.

En ce qui concerne la méthode du travail, un énorme matériau
ethnographique, accompagné par de photos, a été recueilli durant le
travail sur terrain. Afin de repérer des éléments de l’écoculture dans la
culture traditionnelle, nous avons étudié la littérature orale recueillie par
les folkloristes albanais. Certaines comparaisons avec la tradition orale
française ont été faites.
Pour collecter des données sur le terrain, differentes méthodes et
techniques ont été utilisées. Pour collecter des donnés sur certaines
légendes, croyances et rituels silencieux , nous nous sommes servi de la
technique de l’entretien. Par la suite, c ’est la méthode de participation
active qui nous a servi pour la collecte d’autres données. En étant moi-
même un des visiteurs et des participants de ces rituels, j’ai réussi à
collecter des données directement, à faire des observations et des
entretiens avec les participants actifs et également avec des non
participants.
À part d’observation par la participation directe, j’ai également
utilisé la vidéographie. Cette technique, en dehors de l’authenticité des
images et de l’atmosphère de la manifestation, permet de capter les
aspects géographiques et écologiques de l’environnement, et surtout, de
découvrir ultérieurement certains détails que l’œil de l’homme n’aperçoit
pas au moment de la visite au terrain.

Ce livre vise à saisir l’importance d’étudier les croyances
populaires et pratiques rituelles pour l’identité culturelle et pour

approfondir les connaissances sur le système de valeurs prédominantes,
sur son fondement et son origine, sur ses modes de transformation et
d’évolutions ultérieures.
Le sujet abordé ici est assez complexe, en même temps que très
stimulant et intéressant à étudier. Beaucoup de questions posées dans cette
étude, ont été formulées pour la première fois dans le domaine de la
recherche ethnologique et anthropologique au Kosovo. Etant donné que
les études ethnologiques et anthropologiques antérieures sur la culture
albanaise ont été principalement axées sur des questions telles que : la
famille et l organisation sociale, puis le folklore et la poésie orale, cette
étude se penche particulièrement sur les questions de la représentation
sociale de la nature, ou ce que nous avons appelé écoculture . En dehors
des fêtes annuaires, comme la Saint-Georges et Verëzat (Le jour d’été), qui
sont partiellement étudiées, les pèlerinages dans les montagnes et les rites
de passage dans les pierres, n ’ont guère été étudiées. D ’autres éléments de
la tradition orale comme : le châtiment (ahti), la bénédiction, la
malédiction, le serment, la métamorphose, l empathie, le simulacre, la
métaphore, la communication, la sacralité etc., qui reflètent les liens
spirituels, même très puissants, de l’homme avec la nature, n ’ont pas été
étudiés, même pas soulevés comme question à traiter. D autre part, il est
certain que I’ écoculture”, est un sujet qui n ’a même été abordé ni comme
un terme qui représenterait un sujet ou diverses phénomènes à étudier, ni
comme thème spécifique dans les études de la culture albanaise.
Il serait hypothétique de dire qu il y a eu une certaine
méconnaissance délibérée de cette partie de la culture populaire chez les
chercheurs albanais, mais il est très probable qu il y ait eu une certaine
réticence ou un refus de traiter ces aspects de la culture et de la vie
sociale. Peut-être cette réticence est-elle due aux influences de l idéologie
du progrès, à la théorie de l évolutionnisme ou du matérialisme marxiste,
ou awc stéréotypes comme : primitifs , archaïques”, arriérés”, qui ont
occupé une place importante pour expliquer le processus du
développement social et culturel.
Dans cette recherche ne sont pas inclus non plus les croyances et les
pratiques religieuses ou confessionnelles dominantes, comme celles de
l Islam et du Christianisme. Les influences réciproques entre les religions
institutionnelles et le système de croyance populaires associées à la nature
ont été abordées dans le cadre du syncrétisme. La propagation des
religions monothéistes, d abord du Christianisme et ensuite de l Islam et
leur acceptation par la population, représente un processus complexe
historique et socioculturel qui est accompagnée par le phénomène du

syncrétisme. Dans presque tous les rituels, comme dans les pèlerinages
dans les montagnes, aussi bien dans les rites de passage et dans les fêtes
du renouvellement de la nature, nous avons rencontré des éléments
typiques du syncrétisme.
Cette étude vise, entre autre, à soutenir que les recherches et les
débats sur la culture, pourraient bien se situer même en dehors des cadres
idéologiques historicistes. Les débats et les recherches sur la culture
humaine, au Kosovo comme ailleurs, peuvent être poursuivis en étudiant
des valeurs, des symboles et des modèles culturels universels, qui sont
essentiellement tous humains, transhistoriques et transculturels. C’est ainsi
que l’étude nous montre que, lorsque l’on explore les croyances populaires
et les pratiques rituelles liées à la nature, nous devons savoir qu il existe
une sorte d ambiguïté entre leur emplacement et leur globalité. Parlant du
terrain, ces valeurs, ces symboles et ces modèles culturels, sont
généralement localisés et semblent même être isolés et comme tels au
niveau local, mais, de par la forme, le sens ou le contenu, ils sont
entièrement universels.

ECOCUL TURE. NATUREIN THE ALBANIAN POPULAR
CULTURE
This book is a study of popular beliefs and rituals among Kosovo
Albanians. Certainly, the field of rites and beliefs is quite large, but the aim
is to address specifically the beliefs and ritual practices related to the
nature.
The book consists of ten chapters: 1. Introduction, which presents
the specifics of the research on beliefs and ritual practices, including
theoretical and methodological approaches; 2. Methods of research,
which concerns mainly collection of the data; 3. Towards an idea of eco-
culture, which, in addition to my personal experience and my interest in
ecological thinking, discusses the elements of traditional culture in the
context of the relationship between human and nature; 4. Rock as a
memory and human experience, contains an analysis of a particular ritual
practices related to rocks, namely the rite of passage. Similarly, this
chapter analyzes the prehistoric symbols or rock art of Kosovo, which are
find in the same places where the rites of passage occur; 5. Cults and
beliefs related to mountains, where two pilgrimages to the mountains are
presented; 6. The cult of trees, which contains the data on the sacred trees
and beliefs related to them; 7. Symbolic representation of the animal,
dealing with legends, cults and beliefs, especially those concerning the cult
of the snake and the cuckoo; 8. The feast of rebirth of nature, which
contains descriptions and analysis of traditional celebrations, such as St
George s Day, and Summer Day (Vereza); 9. An Ecomessage in the
Mythology; and 10. The General Conclusion, and finally the list of
bibliography used in the research.
The main idea of this study is the ecoculture, that is to say, a deep
reflection on the spiritual relationship between human and nature. To
explain this idea, I analyze some characteristic elements of the traditional
culture, such as punishment, curse, blessing, oath, metamorphosis,
empathy, reverence, sacredness, etc. These cultural elements do not
concern only the mores and ethical human practices in social life, but also
the relationship between human and nature. Nowadays, in everyday life,
these values are sometimes expressed openly and concretely, and other
times latently and not obviously. In addition to thinking, symbols and

values, the ecoculture also manifests itself through behavior, concrete
actions, and other routines of daily life.
Amongst the conclusions of this thesis is that the environmental
movements in Kosovo, aiming at changing the habits related to the
environment by means of creating the environmental culture and raising
ecological consciousness, must refer to the traditional Albanian
ecoculture, since the latter has many common elements with contemporary
environmental ethics, such as deep ecology, eco-feminism, ecological
spiritualism, dark-green religion, etc.

Regarding the method of work, a huge ethnographic material,
accompanied by pictures, was collected during the fieldwork. To identify
elements of the eco-culture in traditional culture, I studied oral literature
collected by Albanian folklorists. Some comparisons with the French oral
tradition have been made.
Different methods and techniques are used to collect field data.
Regarding information related to legends and some silent beliefs and
rituals, I used interviews, whereas in the largest part of the fieldwork, I
used active participation. Being myself one of the participants of these
rituals, I managed to collect data directly, observing and inten’iening
active participants as well as non-participants.
Apart from the direct observation, I also used videography. In
addition to the authenticity of the images and atmosphere of the event, this
technique captures the geographical and ecological aspects of the
environment, and most importantly it discovers some details hardly, if at
all, noticed by the human eye during the fieldwork.

This book aims at explaining the importance of studying popular
beliefs and ritual practices for cultural identity, as well as to develop
deeper understanding of the dominant value system, that is, its foundations,
origins, and modes of transformations and subsequent developments.
This topic is quite complex, but at the same time very exciting. Many
questions raised here were proposed for the first time in the field of
ethnological and anthropological research in Kosovo. Because previous
ethnological and anthropological studies on Albanian culture have mainly
focused on issues such as family and social organization, folklore and oral
poetiy, this research focuses specifically on issues of social representation
of the nature, or what I refer to as ecoculture . As a matter of fact,
celebrations, such as Feast of St. George and Verëzat (Summer Day), are

partially studied by the Albanian ethnologists or folklorists. Nevertheless,
pilgrimages in the mountains and rites of passage in the rocks are hardly
studied. Other elements of the oral tradition which reflect tight spiritual
links of human with nature, such as punishment (ahti), blessing, curse
(mallkimi), oath (betimi), metamorphosis, empathy, simulacrum,
metaphor, communication, sacredness (shejterimi), etc, were not
addressed at all, let alone being subjects of research. On the other hand, it
is certain that the ecoculture is a topic that has not been mentioned even
as a term that would signify a phenomenon, neither as a specific topic in
the Albanian Studies.
It is assumed that there was some deliberate disregard towards this
part of traditional culture among the Albanian researchers. In any case, I
think that it is very likely that researchers were reluctant to deal with these
aspects of culture and social life. Perhaps this reluctance is due to the
influence of the ideology of progress, the theory of evolution, Marxist
historical materialism, and stereotypes they imply as primitive ,
archaic , backward , which were used as tools to explain the processes
of social and cultural development.
Beliefs and religious practices of institutionalized religions, such as
Islam and Christianity, are not included in this research. The mutual
influence between institutionalized religions and belief systems related to
the nature has been addressed in the context of syncretism. The spread of
monotheistic religions, first the Christianity and then Islam and their
acceptance by the population, represents a complex historical and socio-
cultural process which is accompanied by the phenomenon of syncretism.
Typical elements of syncretism are found in almost all rituals, such as the
pilgrimages to the mountains, rites of passage, and feasts of rebirth of
nature.
This research aims to support the idea that research and debates on
culture, may well take place outside of the ideological and historicist
frameworks and constrains. Debates and research on human culture, in
Kosovo and elsewhere, may be pursued by studying the values, symbols
and universal cultural models, which are essentially universal, trans-
hislorical and trans-cultural. The book shows that, when exploring the
beliefs and ritual practices related to the nature, we must know that there
is a sort of ambiguity between their locality and theirs globality. Based on
the data, these values, symbols and cultural models are typically localized
and appear to be isolated even at the local level, but its form, meaning or
content are utterly universal.
