Xin The book addresses the materials, techniques, and development strategies used in creating high-performance, functional, and fit-for-purpose textiles. The need for manufacturers to make new products, diversify existing products, and remain globally competitive is increasing. Engineering of High-Performance Textiles discusses the fiber-to-fabric engineering of various textile products. Each chapter focuses on practical guidelines and approaches for common issues in textile performance and product development. Part One focuses on product design, covering fiber properties, fiber selection, fiber blending, and conversion of fibers into fit-for-purpose yarns and fabrics. Part Two discusses main performance deficiencies of common consumer textiles and technologies available to textile engineers and designers for product improvement and design. Part Three moves toward product specialization, examining fabrics for insect repellency, camouflage, impact resistance, filtration, reinforcement of engineering composites, electrical conductivity in protective and electronic textiles, and stretchy sportswear and compression garments. Coordinated by two highly distinguished editors, this book is a practical toolkit for a broad spectrum of readers, especially those involved in research and development of both traditional and new-generation textile products. Engineering of High-Performance Textiles is a practical resource for all those engaged in textile development and production,
and for academics engaged in research into textile science and technology. About the Editors Dr. Menghe Miao is principal scientist in materials science and engineering, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia. He graduated from Donghua University, China, received his PhD in textile engineering from the University of Leeds, UK, and was awarded Fellow of the Textile Institute (FTI, CText) in 2000. His research interests and publications embrace many facets of the science and engineering of fiber-based materials, including fiber, yarn and nonwoven materials and manufacturing technology, textile performances and product engineering, carbon nanotube yarns and nanocomposites, structure and fabrication of fiber-reinforced composite materials, flexible energy storage devices, and textile sensors. Professor John H Xin graduated from the University of Leeds, UK with a PhD in Textile Chemistry. He is currently the head of the Institute of Textiles Clothing and chair professor of textile chemistry, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His main research interests include functional and smart textile surface treatments, new nano- and biofunctional material synthesis and applications, new ecofriendly dyestuffs, and color science and technology. He is a Fellow and Charted Colorist of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC), UK. He has published over 300 scientific papers and patents and won many prestigious awards for new inventions and technologies, such as Gold medal from the Society of Dyes and Colourists for outstanding research and
innovation into novel textile finishes.
