Statistical Sample
Statistical information on immigrants in the sample communities
derives from approximately 750 male and female newcomers married at Holy
Cross (Minneapolis), Holy Trinity (Utica), St. John Cantius (Cleveland) and
St. Mary (New York Mills) from establishment of the parish to 1920. Such
persons remained in their respective settlements until their deaths or to 1940.
This was a minority of the immigrants married at the parishes. City directories
provided residential and occupational information. The children of immigrants
totalled about 1700, compiled from baptismal records through 1920. These
persons remained in their cities of birth until death or at least 1940. An
additional sample of Polish National Catholic children bom up to 1925 was
taken from PNC baptismal records at Holy Cross (Utica), Sacred Heart
(Cleveland), Sacred Heart (Minneapolis) and Sacred Heart (New York Mills)
in order to augment the numbers of National Catholic children for purposes of
comparison. City directories provided residential and occupational data, while
public and parochial school records gave information on educational histories.
Occupational ranking came from Stephen Themstrom, The Other Bostonians:
Poverty and Progress in the American Metropolis, 1880-1970 (Cambridge:
Harvard University Press, 1973), appendix.
