PHYSICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS
D.G.C. Jones
This book has been written by an author with extensive experience of
presenting the subject to undergraduates. Using a modern quantum
mechanical approach to the subject, it keeps the mathematics to the
minimum needed for a clear and comprehensive understanding of the
material.
Beginning with an introduction and treatment of atomic structure, the
book goes on to deal with quantum mechanics, atomic spectra and the
theory of interaction between atoms and radiation. Progressing to
more complex atoms and atomic structure in general, it concludes
with treatments of laser physics and of modern single atom experi-
ments. Appendices deal with, among other subjects, Rutherford
scattering, calculation of spin-orbit energy, derivation of the Einstein
B coefficient, the Pauli exclusion principle and the derivation of eigen-
states in helium.
As with the other books in the Physics and Its Applications series.
Atomic Physics is essential reading for any student whose programme
of study includes this most central of subjects.
Geoff Jones is Honorary Lecturer in Experimental Physics at the
University of Sussex, Brighton, UK.
