| adam_text | The Oxford Handbook of JRitblic History
introduces the major debates within
public history, the methods and sources
that comprise a public historian’s toolkit,
and exemplary examples of practice. It
views public history as a dynamic process
combining historical research and a wide
range of work with and for the public.
Veteran public historians James B.
Gardner and Paula Hamilton acknowl-
edge the imprecision bedeviling attempts
to define public history and use this
Handbook as an opportunity to shape
the field by taking a deliberately broad
view. This collection of twenty-nine
essays covers topics ranging from the
Magna Carta to the graphic novel within
the context of public history, illustrating
the diverse and often colorful ways the
field may be explored. The contribu-
tors include public historians in eleven
countries who work inside and outside
the academy in a range of institutions
and sites, and those who are politically
committed to communicating history to a
wide range of audiences.
This Handbook provides both prac-
ticing historians and those entering
the field a map for understanding the
historical landscape of the future, not just
to the historiographical debates of the
academy but also the boom in commemo-
ration and history evident in many coun-
tries since the 1990s. There has been a
significant increase in both the creation
and consumption of history through
activities such as genealogy, cultural
tourism, increased memorialization, and
the production of historical books, televi-
sion, and films. Public historians need to
understand the contexts for these devel-
opments and to negotiate their implica-
tions for questions of historical authority
and the public historian’s work.
