Zusammenfassung: | The period between the 1880s and the 1920s was a time of momentous change in almost every aspect of political, social and cultural life of the Ottoman Empire and its successor states. It was also an age of widespread experiments in literature and the media, of which the rich genre of Turkish autobiography forms a part. The texts examined in this study were written after the end of the Ottoman Empire in the cultural context of the Turkish Republic, which went to great lengths to disassociate itself from the empire and its legacy. However, what emerges from this analysis is that the 'Ottoman chapter' in the lives of Turkish intellectuals, academics, journalists or politicians was anything but a topic consigned to the censor's blacklist. While the official Turkish republican discourse presented a downright dismissal of the imperial past, autobiographical narratives offer a much more balanced picture. The book first discusses the context in which post-Ottoman Turkish autobiographies were written, charting the authors' motives as well as the political and cultural framework under which these texts were produced. The book then analyses the topics, such as childhood and education, which are discussed by authors of Turkish autobiographies in five thematic chapters. In this way, it will be shown which attitudes towards the Ottoman parts of their life stories were taken by the authors as they endeavoured to paint what one of them, the doctor Tevfik Saglam, called 'images of a past world' |

In this way, it will be shown which attitudes towards the Ottoman parts of their life stories were taken by the authors as they endeavoured to paint what one of them, the doctor Tevfik Saglam, called 'images of a past world' Geschichte 1288-1918 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Türken (DE-588)4061165-6 gnd rswk-swf Beschreibung (DE-588)4144882-0 gnd rswk-swf Autobiografie (DE-588)4003939-0 gnd rswk-swf Türkei Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 gnd rswk-swf Autobiographies / Turkey / History Turkey / History / Ottoman Empire, 1288-1918 / Biography Turkey / Social conditions / 1288-1918 Autobiographies Social conditions Turkey 1288-1918 Biography History (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Türken (DE-588)4061165-6 s Autobiografie (DE-588)4003939-0 s Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 g Beschreibung (DE-588)4144882-0 s Geschichte 1288-1918 z DE-604 Äquivalent Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-367-88177-1 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-1-315-57654-1 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-1-317-15270-5 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-1-317-15271-2 Life narratives of the Ottoman realm volume 1 (DE-604)BV045160340 1 Digitalisierung UB Bamberg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=029844722&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis |
