adam_text | JOSEPH WEIKERT (1837-1907)
61
denen man wenig, fast gar nichts wusste.
(Requiems, Messen, Gradualien, Offertorien,
Choralmelodien und Gregorianische Gesänge,
Kirchengesänge für katholische Prozessionen und lateinis-
che Gesänge für Orgel mit Orchesterbegleitung und
Kirchenlieder für Chöre und gemischte Chöre). Neben
Kirchenmusik befasst.
(Übersetzt von Ruzica Juzbasic und Robert Rohr)
JOSEPH WEIKERT, LIFE AND WORK
his monograph is the first attempt to present the
life and work of Joseph Weikert to the public,
he was one of the greatest musicians and com-
posers of the utmost south of former Hungarian
Kingdom. Musical pedagogue and composer,
who during his long musical life and work in Bela Crkva
(between 1875 and 1907) impressed a deepest stamp on
the music in Bela Crkva in the second half of the 19th
century and in the first years of the century to come, giv-
ing his indelible contribution to the musical, pedagogical
and composing mind of Southern Hungary of those times.
After the Introductory Note and Foreword,
where the main reasons for appearing of this monograph,
as well as the cultural, social, economic and political con-
ditions in Bela Crkva at the time of Weikert s arrival to
Bela Crkva in 1875 are given, the authors introduce to
us the life and work of Joseph Weikert.
The whole monograph is divided into five chap-
ters the titles of which show the complexity of approach
towards the theme, while a wide spectre of questions,
data and material is elaborated at the same time in a con-
cise way of a relatively great number of pages.
The first part of the monograph (Joseph
Weikert in Bohemia and Hungaria) explains the ques-
tions related to the origin and antiquity of the Weikert
family, education of Joseph Weikert and his musical
activity before his arrival to Bela Crkva. Joseph Weikert
was bom in Friedland, county of Mlada Boleslav, in
Bohemia (present Czech Republic) in the first half of
1837, by father Karel Weikert and mother Francisca
Hampel. He was educated in Prague, studying music in
an old organ school (Prazske varhanny skolc) at the
Prague conservatory (1866/1867) where he took his diplo-
ma in organ in 1867. For a shorter time he acted as a
catholic organist in Litomerice (Leitmeritz) in Bohemia
moving later to Lugosch (Lugoj, Banat) in 1874 working
for two following years as a Chormeister (1874 - 1875).
The second part of monograph (Arrival of
Joseph Weikert to Bela Crkva) is dedicated to a detailed
explanation of his appearance in Bela Crkva in 1875
when he was accepted as an organist in a roman -
catholic church. The authors, in this part, analyzed also
the history of the roman - catholic church St. Anna in
Bela Crkva supplying the data on the first organ and arti-
sans who manufactured the same and installed it in the
church.
The Musical family of the Weikerts is the
third part in monograph. The data and material in this
part are related to the children of Joseph Weikert. All of
them were gifted musicians. Julia Weikert (Bela Crkva,
January 9th, 1876 - Bela Crkva, June 14th, 1895) was the
first child of Joseph Weikert. She was tutored in music
by her father and only some twelve years old (1888) she
appeared as a concerto pianist in Bela Crkva: Anna
Weikert (Bela Crkva, October 17th, 1877 - Bela Crkva,
November 14th, 1913) the second child of Joseph
Weikert, also gained the music basics and piano playing
with her father s. With some twelve years she played
piano in public in Bela Crkva. She studied music in the
Wiener Musikkonservatorium (Konservatorium fur Musik
und darstellende Kunst) in Wienna (1897/1899) with pro-
fessor Hans Schmitt. As one of the best in her class she
received the Great Silver Medal of the conservatory.
Florentina Weikert (Bela Crkva, May 18th, 1881 -
Budapest, May 21th, 1977), the fifth child of Joseph
Weikert. She also gained the music basics and piano
playing from her father and with some nine years she
appeared in public playing piano in Bela Crkva. Otto
Weikert (Bela Crkva, June 16th, 1883 - Novi Sad, May
15th, 1924), the sixth child of Joseph Weikert, bore a
diploma of a musicteacher. He was tutored by his father
in violin, piano and organ. With some thirteen years he
appeared in public as a solo - violinist in chamber con-
certos in Bela Crkva. In the period between the middle
of 1896 to the middle of 1914 he acted as a concerto vio-
linst in a chamber concertos in Bela Crkva and Vrsac. In
1904 he founded the Erste Weisskirchner Musikorchester
and in 1910 a chamber group Weikert und Neuderth.
From 1907 to 1914 he was the organist and regenschori
in the roman - catholic church St. Anna, as well as he
Chormeister in the Gewerbe Gesang Verein, in the Srpsko
Pevacko Drustvo (Serbian Singers Society) and a con-
ducter of concertos in Bela Crkva. The data and biogra-
phies, presented in this part of monograph, clearly con-
firm the fact that the Weikert family should be compared
with the Novacek family, if not in all, than in many iden-
tical historical and musical details.
The fourth chapter of the monograph, called
Musical work of Joseph Weikert, contains the data and
materials about his 32 years of active musical work in Bela
Crkva, presented through several smaller contributions. The
first contribution treats Weikert and his work in church
music and singing in the roman - catholic church. The sec-
ond contribution partly describes the works that he used and
executed in the church during regular mass service and
catholic feasts. In February 2nd, 1905, Weikert celebrat-
ed in Bela Crkva 30 years of working as organist and
regenschori in the church. The third contribution refers to
the work of Joseph Weikert in the Deutscher
Mannergesangverein in Bela Crkva from 1875 to 1907.
From 1876 he was in charge of the Gesang - Courses in
this singing society and in 1900 he was elected a hon-
orary member. The fourth contribution gives the data
about his work in preparing operas and operettas, with
description of the most important opera presentations with
the members and chorus of Deutscher
Mannergesangverein. Weikert worked for 32 years in this
society and also was the Chormaster in the Srpsko
Pevacko Drustvo and Gewerbe Gesang Verein. His pri-
vate music school in Bela Crkva (1876 - 1906) where he
taught singing, piano and violin playing, is treated later.
In 1876 Joseph Weikert founded a Knabenmusikkapelle,
in 1878 a chamber group called Hausorchester and in
1894 the Salonorchester Weikert (where his children
played). From 1876 he started organizing permanent
chamber concertos, as well as demonstrations of his
pupils in which he himself participated (as a violinist).
The next contibution treats his best known students who
practiced piano playing and singing with Weikert
(Ernestina Benedikt - Brankovici, Maria Bandl -
Udwardy, Amilia Putsch and Hildegard Merkl). The
penultimate contribution gives the data on Joseph
Weikert as a concert meister and violinist and the last
one is about his interest in musical literature.
The last part of the monograph, i.e. the fifth
chapter, speaks about the musical opus of Joseph
Weikert as a composer, rendering, for our circumstances,
capital data and description nearly of all his compositions
with the presentation and comments of the opus of church
music which he composed.
Though it was not preserved as a complete
whole. Weikert left a voluminous work as a composer
(original music sheets and scores) from which up to the
present day nothing has been publisched, or,
respectively, printed as particular music issues with
respectable publisching house of those times. The descrip-
tion of miscellaneous opus of Joseph Weikert as a com-
poser, given for the first time in this monograph, presents
to the musical public of Vojvodina and Banat the first
more complex description of his church music composi-
tions about which nearly nothing or anything was known
until now. However, Joseph Weikert himself did not
give opus numbers to his works so it was necessary to
assort them. This was undertaken by Zivan Istvanic who
prepared the description of Joseph Weikert s opus in a
chronological order so that now his compositions can be
followed in the order in which they took their origin.
Consequently, according to Zivan Istvanic, this repre-
sents a probable order of the origin of Joseph Weikert s
compositions and it should be used, for practical reasons
as such, and not as a definite one. Joseph Weikert com-
posed his first work in 1867 and up to 1907 he com-
posed, as it is evident form the attached description,
exactly 44 works mostly being for church. In addition to
the pieces indicated therein, it is sure there exist more
church music compositions of Joseph Weikert which we
could not follow as we could not investigate the local
parisch arhives and this should be complemented by fur-
ther investigation.
Joseph Weikert died in Bela Crkva on
November 15th 1907 and is buried in the catholic
cemetery.
In any case, the musical historiography of
Vojvodina and Banat got in this monograph a valuable
contribution of use to anybody dedicated to a more seri-
ous study of the origins and development of church music
in this former part of Austro - Hungarian Empire.
