Zusammenfassung: | In the early decades of the twentieth century, two intertwined changes began to shape the direction of German society. The baptism of the German film industry took place amid post-World War I conditions of political and social breakdown, and the cultural vacuum left by collapsing institutions was partially filled by moving images. At the same time, the emerging human sciences—psychiatry, neurology, sexology, eugenics, industrial psychology, and psychoanalysis—began to play an increasingly significant role in setting the terms for the way Germany analyzed itself and the problems it had inherited from its authoritarian past, the modernizing process, and war. Moreover, in advancing their professional and social goals, these sciences became heavily reliant on motion pictures.Situated at the intersection of film studies, the history of science and medicine, and the history of modern Germany, Homo Cinematicus connects the rise of cinema as a social institution to an inquiry into the history of knowledge production in the human sciences. Taking its title from a term coined in 1919 by commentator Wilhelm Stapel to identify a new social type that had been created by the emergence of cinema, Killen's book explores how a new class of experts in these new disciplines converged on the figure of the "homo cinematicus" and made him central to many of that era's major narratives and social policy initiatives.Killen traces film's use by the human sciences as a tool for producing, communicating, and popularizing new kinds of knowledge, as well as the ways that this alliance was challenged by popular films that interrogated the truth claims of both modern science and scientific cinema. In doing so, Homo Cinematicus endeavors to move beyond the divide between scientific and popular film, examining their historical coexistence and coevolution |

In doing so, Homo Cinematicus endeavors to move beyond the divide between scientific and popular film, examining their historical coexistence and coevolution Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1912-1941 gnd rswk-swf European History Film Studies History Media Studies World History Film Geschichte Gesellschaft Psychologie Sozialwissenschaften Motion pictures Social aspects Germany History 20th century Motion pictures Germany Psychological aspects History 20th century Cinematography Scientific applications Germany History 20th century Psychoanalysis and motion pictures Germany History 20th century Social sciences Germany History 20th century Social change Germany History 20th century Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Nachkriegszeit (DE-588)4421423-6 gnd rswk-swf Humanwissenschaften (DE-588)4481515-3 gnd rswk-swf Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 gnd rswk-swf Psychologie (DE-588)4047704-6 gnd rswk-swf Kino (DE-588)4129654-0 gnd rswk-swf Film (DE-588)4017102-4 gnd rswk-swf Erster Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079163-4 gnd rswk-swf Sozialer Wandel (DE-588)4077587-2 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Erster Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079163-4 s Nachkriegszeit (DE-588)4421423-6 s Sozialer Wandel (DE-588)4077587-2 s Kino (DE-588)4129654-0 s Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Humanwissenschaften (DE-588)4481515-3 s Geschichte z DE-604 Film (DE-588)4017102-4 s Psychologie (DE-588)4047704-6 s Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 s Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 s Geschichte 1912-1941 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9780812249279 https://doi.org/10.9783/9780812294118 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
