| adam_text | Summary
Maria Levitska is the leading Ukrainian stage designer. Her professional
activities resulted in creation of scenographic solutions for more than
200 theatre pieces, ֊֊ operas, ballets, drama performances, — in Ukraine,
Canada, Poland, Russia and Slovenia. Her stage setting were on a tour to
Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Spain, just to
mention a few.
Ms Levitska has been the Director of Scenography for more than
25 years, and it is at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine where
sets and hundreds of costumes for over 50 operas and ballets were born.
Her multiform and multifaceted creation embraces classical operas Don
Carlo, La traviata, Macbeth, Nabucco and Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe
Verdi, La Cenerentola by Gioacchino Rossini, Turandot by Giacomo Puccini
and L’elisir ďamore by Gaetano Donizetti; Ukrainian operas — Zaporozhian
Beyond The Danube by Semen Gulak-Artemovskiy and Moses by Myroslav
Skoryk, as well as Russian opera classics — Iolanta by Pyotr Tchaikovsky,
The Tale of Tsar Saltan by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Sets and costumes for ballets are similarly bright creations by M. Levitska:
Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty by Pyotr Tchaikovsky;
Cinderella by Sergei Prokofiev; Daphnis et Chloe by Maurice Ravel; Evenings
on a Farmstead near Dykanka by Yevhen Stankových; Zorba the Greek by
Mikis Theodorakis; Caprices of Fate (Niccolo Paganini / Myroslav Skoryk).
Stage is not the limit, and oil paintings, works in pastel and ink, in
batik technique complete the portrait of Maria Levitska as an artist whose
achievements in theatre realm are marked with the highest state awards.
Anatoliy Solovianenkoy Chief Stage Director, the National Opera and
Ballet Theatre of Ukraine, points out that «historical credibility and unique
stand of an author blend in harmony in each of her works while scenographic
solutions and costumes impress with beauty, excellence and ingenuity».
Michail Reznikovich, Artistic Managing Director, Russian Drama
Theatre named after Lesia Ukrainka, wrote as follows: «I am not afraid to say
that sets designed by Levitska always bear certain spirit, a touch of eternity,
incorruptibility of objective reality. It is far from adoration of personal
mastery in composition, artistry in drawing and impeccability in costume
outline that is both historically credible and stylized. She hears an author,
a stage director, clearly reproduces an epoch and presents life in its complete,
so controversial dialectical integrity».
