Zusammenfassung:Socialism was supposed to create the "New Man". For the first time, this study puts the focus on how the extensive transformation of society effected by SED policies also re-defined the human relationship to nature, including animals. An analysis of selected areas of animal husbandry – pet keeping and livestock breeding – as well as animal protection policies will show that not only people, but also animals were subject to a reconfiguration. Looking at the various facets of human-animal relations as phenomena of socialist society contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of GDR history
