In this richly layered travel book the author explores the
historical linkages between single-truth convictions and
totalitarianism. He visits those parts of Germany, Sweden and
Norway that bear witness not only to the darkest impacts of
fascism but also to the rise of Protestant fundamentalism in its
early Pietist form. He does this within the framework of his more
focused intent of describing the Pielist-inspired circumstances
and convictions that brought his Scandinavian forebears as
missionaries to 19th century South Africa. The urge to make
such explorations first stirred in Robbins during the painful
political upheavals that exploded in KwaZulu-Natal in the late
1980s. His investigations in Europe twenty years later are given
an added context through this earlier personal involvement with
another form of socio-political despotism. But it is the author’s
pursuit of his family roots that provides an extra depth to his
insights into an indisputably universal theme.
