The 1970s represented a crucial juncture in the evolution of modern
American playwriting and theatre. Following the experimental devised
theatre of the 1960s, the 1970s marked a 'return to the text' - but a text
substantially modified by these experiments. Playwrights of the decade
capitalized on the freedoms explored by the radical theatre of the 1960s,
incorporating new strategies of language, semiosis and representation into
plays and performance texts that marked the beginnings of postmodern
theatre in'America.
