The 1950s was a time of political paranoia for Americans, but the
widespread fear of subversion ran deeper than McCarthy's rants, and 1950s
Americans feared more than just communists. This was an age during which
the forces of political and social conservatism were fighting for the soul of
America. Battle lines were being drawn between the privileged and those
who saw themselves held on the periphery by gender, sexual preference and
race, as well as political affiliation. Drama became a means of expression for
the growing liberal voices of the nation, voices that called for greater equality,
while acknowledging the seemingly unbridgeable inequities of the time.
