Beginning with the Crash in 1929 and ending with the start of the war
in Europe, the 1930s was a period of national uncertainty for many
Americans. Theatre of this decade was defined by the larger themes of
the Great Depression: class structure, capitalism, money and greed.
The era also welcomed the notion of collective playwriting and production
as well as new funding models to include group projects alongside the
established lights of Broadway.
