There has never been a book like it.
Peace, Great Expectations, Crime and Punishment
were all published in the same decade, yet
only Les Ad is ¿rabies can stand as the novel of
the nineteenth century. But why is this so?
How did Victor Hugo’s epic work come to be
the most widely read and frequently adapted
story of all time?
As David Bellos shows in this rich and
remarkable book, the story of Ees is
not only one of a masterwork begun and put
aside, interrupted by revolution, completed
in exile and published at speed — after the
deal of the century — despite the dangers of
censorship, piracy and stormy weather in the
