Justice
Biography of R.A.M. Salojee
This is the biography of a social, medical,
and political activist who struggled under
Apartheid and democracy for social justice in
South Africa.
R.A.M. Salojee served in 263 organisations,
committees, and delegations over an unbroken
period of 50 years. He also served three
indefinite terms of imprisonment without trial
and three terms of arbitrary banning order. He
endured systematic persecution, with joy in his
heart.
The dominant theme of his life was to sen e
the poor, the sick, and orphans. He lived by the
definition of love - to postulate for others what
one desires for oneself. This biography explores
the formidable logic of the intertwining of this
rheme and definition.
The biography also explores whether
the consequences of Salojee’s idealism on
his wife and children were fair to them. His
wife intermittently experienced political
widowhood; and his children, half orphanhood.
His wife physically embodied the practical need
to implement basic family values to withstand
the social ravishes of police persecution.
The scope of his struggle included
issues of peace, unity, understanding, co-
operation, human rights, freedom, culture,
literature, oratory, science, sports, war, ethics,
economics, education, good governance,
disaster management, idealism, hope, truth,
reconciliation, forgiveness, civic duty, and
perpetual youth.
In his struggle for the betterment of life
he organically developed a newfound mastery
of life, underpinned by universal values and
incorrigible beliefs.
Thirteen community awards were
conferred on him, over a period of 21 years, in
recognition of his social, medical, and political
activism.
This biography is the first in Awqaf SA’s
series of Leaders and Legacies Project and
it underpins the R.A.M. and Sara Salojee
Endowment Fund to help advance the socio-
economic rights of ordinary people.
