South Ural Group of the Volga-Ural variant of the Yamnaya cultural and historical community
The southern near Ural area is a notable place in the Eurasian steppes. On the one hand, it is lo-
cated on the border between Europe and Asia, on the other — it embraces the area that changes from
steppe to forest-steppe climatic conditions. At the same time this region is a part of the entire steppe
area between the Volga and Ural rivers.
In general, the geographic position and the climatic peculiarities in the area between the Volga
and Ural determined the special character of the region in question in the Eurasian history of the steppe
population from the Neolithic period up to the 18—19th centuries. Any archaeological study in this
area is unlikely without taking into consideration the whole of the steppe zone in Eurasia as it came in
contact with all earlier centers of farming and ancient metal working in the South — via Central Asia
and the Caucasus with those in Asia Minor and the Middle East and with northern Black sea areas and
the Mediterranean — in the West.
This study is a summary of the investigation of the Yamnaya culture sites in the southern near Ural
area since 1977 undertaken by the author for many years. It was pursued in order to evaluate the evidence
peculiar to the Yamnaya culture in the near Ural area against the background of the Volga and Ural as
well as other variants of this culture. Traditionally for archaeologists this investigation uses a typological
method with the corresponding correlation of grave goods. Anthropological, metallographic and tech-
nological study of ceramics provide for a fuller description of the burial rite and help to understand the
origin, consolidation and development of the Yamnaya culture tradition in the near Ural area as well as to
find ties with other variants of the Yamnaya culture community. Carbon dating has been used extensively.
On the evidence collected during archaeological and palaesoil study of three burial grounds in the
western part of the Orenburg region (II Shumayevsky kurgan, 1 and II Shumayevsky burial grounds,
V Mustayevsky burial ground, Skvortsovsky burial ground) it may be argued that the Yamnaya culture
evolved for a period long enough to pass several stages that correspond to the changes in the soil, veg-
etation and landscape, natural and climatic conditions, in general.
It was established that natural and climatic conditions during the eneolithic and Early Bronze age
period were a little different from what we have today. They seemed to be cooler and damper, i.e. more
favorable for cattle breeding. About the middle 3d millennium BC began the arid period that lasted well
in the Middle Bronze Age.
One can distinguish three climatic zones in the area between the Volga and Ural (the Northern
Caspian area — southern steppe, the Low Volga area — steppes and semi-deserts, the Middle Volga
and southern Near Ural areas — southern forest-steppes). The natural and climatic features there fa-
vored mobile cattle breeding on a vertical meridian principle which presumes summer and winter pas-
tures. In the eneolithic period the population of the Khvalynsky culture was the first to do so. They were
also the first to practice burial in kurgans. Since then kurgans had come not only to symbolize nomadic
mentality and ideology but also to become an important landmark on their routes.
On the evidence collected from the sites of Samarsky and Khvalynsky cultures cattle breeding had
already a lead in the procurement of living and this process acquired a ritual and religious character.
Considering the information about the development of cattle breeding and its dependence on natu-
ral and climatic conditions we have made two conclusions. Firstly, the Yamnaya culture peculiarities
as well as the nomadic method of cattle breeding took place in favorable climatic conditions and were
not caused by the arid climate. Secondly, mobile cattle breeding and integration of the local population,
specifically, in this area was prompted by the peculiar natural and climatic conditions available by the
beginning of the eneolithic Age.
It was not until the eneolithic period lasted for rather a long time that the Yamnaya culture ap-
peared in the area between the Volga and Ural. The principal and most important groups of the popula-
tion there in the Middle and Late Aeneolithic period were the representatives of the Khvalynsky and
343
Srednestog cultures. Both cultures had already brought cattle breeding and metal working to a consider-
able level. The population of the Khvalynsky culture gradually spread its influence farther to the north
inhabiting the whole ecological niche in the area between the Volga and Ural.
The earliest eneolithic burials of the Khvalynsky and Srednestog cultures show all principal traces
of the Yamnaya culture features (first of all, burial under a kurgan, a crouched position of the dead on
the back or the side, decoration with ochre and so on), especially those from the second half of the fifth
millennium BC. So, the Yamnaya culture rose and evolved in the steppes from across the Volga up to
the near Dnieper area.
Excavating several sites of the Yamnaya culture in the near Ural area using the combined meth-
ods of palaeosoil study and radiocarbon dating we managed to make the latter more specific. We have
established three stages in the evolution of the Yamnaya culture in the area between the Volga and Ural:
1 — earlier (Repin); 2 — advanced A and B; 3 — late (Poltavkinsky). The absolute chronology of the
Repin stage has been calibrated within 3800—3300 BC, the advanced stage — within 3200—2600 BC,
the Poltavkinsky stage — within 2600—2200 BC.
When compared with the investigation of other similar cultures it would seem that the Yamnaya
culture features in the area between the Volga and Ural developed simultaneously with the Maikop
culture in the near Caucasus, Volosovsky and Garinsky cultures in the forest areas of East Europe, the
Aeneolithic cultures across the Ural and with the Afanasyevsky culture. The appearance of catacomb
tribes in the middle 3d millennium BC split the Yamnaya culture integrity, but it retained its territory in
the area between the Volga and Ural, Since then began the final stage in the evolution of the Yamnaya
culture when it gradually lost its age-old traditions.
The population of the Yamnaya culture played a significant role in the life of those inhabiting the
forests in the near Volga and Kama areas. The association of steppe and forest population date back to
the times of the Neolithic —Aeneolithic period. By the early 4th millennium BC steppe cultures had
apparently played a definite role in the development of the Volosovsky — Garinsky cultural commu-
nity. Under the influence of some Yamnaya culture communities copper works spread to forest tribes.
An appreciable contribution was made by some Yamnaya cultural communities from the Volga
and Ural area in the development of eneolithic features across the Ural and in South Siberia and later in
the Altai as well as the Upper Yenisei (the Afanasyevsky culture).
One of important factors that gave rise to the continuous evolution of the Yamnaya culture in the
Volga-Ural area and its influence over neighboring regions was the discovery and exploitation of the
Kargalinsky copper mines. The study of metal artifacts from the Yamnaya culture burials as well as the
special investigation of the mines showed that they began to mine for copper about 3700 BC, i.e. during
the Repin stage of the Yamnaya culture. This conclusion is supported by the spectrographic analysis of
metal items found in earlier Yamnaya culture graves in the near Ural and Volga areas (burial grounds at
Gerasimovka Ii 4/2, Pokrovka, Skatovka 5/3, Orlovka 12/2).
Thus, our suppositions that the Yamnaya culture community played a cardinal role in the discov-
ery of the Kargalinsky copper mines were upheld by the latest studies at the mines themselves and on
excavating numerous artifacts of the Ural center of metal-working from the Yamnaya culture burial
grounds. One can judge the production level of the mines by considering the fact that the metallo-
graphic analysis of 70 metal items uncovered in the region in question showed local production except
for one knife of the Caucasian origin. The near Ural metal workers widely practiced casting in open,
two-sided and trihedral moulds with cores for bushings. They used well heated loam and stone moulds.
Large-sized items were always cast and then hammered hot. After all operations they produced articles
of good quality; defective tools were rare. About 60% of all tools were additionally hammered cold, es-
pecially along the blades. Cold hardening was not infrequent to raise the strength of metal. So, unifica-
tion of production was apparent and considering the prevalence of copper from the Kargalinsky mines
it led us to believe that local metal working had been carried out on a high level on a par with major
metal working centers in those days. This conclusion was supported by numerous finds of metal items
original in form which had nothing in common or very little similarity to those found in the Caucasus
or in the areas to the west of the Black sea.
344
Compared to the sites of other variants of the Yamnaya culture the metal items uncovered in the
near Ural area did not only outnumber them but were more diversified and so original that could be
regarded as pure inventions by the local masters. These, for instance, include bimetallic items (copper
and cosmic iron) and a lance head.
There was some evidence of wheel transport used by the population of the Yamnaya culture in the
Volga-Ural area (Shumayevsky kurgans). For burials they made special wheels and parts of carriages
designed exclusively for funerals and burials. The design of graves with remnants of wheels symboli-
cally reproduced the design of hooded carts on a wheeled platform in which nomads roamed the steppe.
Burials under kurgans with some parts of wheel carriages had been intended for the elite of the Yam-
naya culture community.
Closely connected with wheel transport was the development of carpentry. The appearance of
professional carpenters became evident due to a number of grave goods found in the region in question
which contained carpenter’s tools. For instance, the grave of a man, 50-55 years old, found in the burial
ground at Tamar-Utkul VII 8/4 had a number of wood-working copper tools (an axe, an adze, a long
knife, a chisel, an owl, a cutter with an iron blade).
Considering different burial rites in use the Yamnaya culture community was thoroughly strati-
fied. We found burial grounds for warriors, priests, craftsmen (metal workers, carpenters, potters) and
ordinary cattle-breeders. Graves for chiefs appeared to be especially complex and enormously labori-
ous (Boldyrevo I 1/1). Of special interest were the kurgans with dismembered skeletons of the buried
(separate skulls, human sacrifice) that point to a sophisticated burial practice in the Yamnaya culture
community. Of special interest were the kurgans with dismembered skeletons of those buried (separate
skulls, human sacrifice) that point to a sophisticated burial practice current in the Yamnaya culture com-
munity. Such kurgans with burials like that could be regarded as sanctuaries.
Over three stages of its evolution the Yamnaya culture in the near Ural area as well as everywhere
between the Volga and Ural, judging by the burial rites, showed definite conservatism. It was established
on the basis of local Aeneolithic cultures in close association with a number of cultures of the Balkan-
Carpathian metal-working province (Tripolsky, Kukuten and others). For about fifteen hundred years the
burial traditions of the Yamnaya culture in this area had remained practically the same. But you could
note that the burial practice had become rather complex and more differentiated from the earlier stage to
the end of the advanced period and gradually simplified during the late Yamnaya culture period.
The Late Yamnaya culture stage began when the Catacomb culture spread to the Volga-Dnieper
region. But the Yamnaya culture tradition was still retained near the Ural as well as in the Middle and
Low Volga areas during the early and advanced stages in the evolution of the Catacomb culture.
