Resume
History of the Chateau of Namest’ nad Oslavou has been across different historical
periods always more or less associated with music In the 16th century Zerotins
family played an important role in reconstruction of the inconvenient gothic
castle into an extensive renaissance chateau and at this time Namest’ became
an important centre of cultural life, especially of music, this idea is supported by
emerging sources suggesting the musicality of the place. The decoration of the
renaissance arcades of the inner courtyard bears, apart from other iconography,
there is also the depictions of some historical musical instruments. Zerotins family
had focused on religious music of Czech Brethren.
Back to this period we can date the first surviving written source, which is
a wedding song, drawn up on the occasion of the marriage of Karel Starst of
Zerotin with Barbora Krajirka of Krajku. From the time of the other owners of the
chateau Werdenbergs family, have been preserved a fresco with musical motifs
decorating the castle library and a prospectus of an original organ case tools
made by Matthew Paul Roskos in the chateau s chapel. Kazimir of Werdenberg
is the author of a lute tablature from 1713. Subsequent owners, the family of
Kuffsteins, built a positive organ in the chapel of Saint Anne. This tool made by
Anton Preisinger from Freistadt was built in 1745 and after restoration it was
relocated to the chateau s library.
The most important period of musical history of the chateau are the first four
decades of the 19th century, when the estate was owned by Heinrich Wilhelm
Haugwitz (1770-1842). Shortly after he took over the estate in 1794, he had
founded truly unique ensemble. In the 30s of the 19th century embraced the
chateau band more than three dozen instrumentalists and choir had nine soloists
and twenty four choir members. The band composed primarily of employees
of the castle was complemented by cantors and musicians from surrounding
villages. Music Production at the chateau at the time of greatest fame of the band
was very numerous. I n one week, the music performace was organised even three
times. They used to play not only in the room in the first floor of the building but
also in the newly built chateau theater and especially in the former sala terrena
(today library) and in the chapel. Theater, oratorio and opera performances also
took place in a nearby summer residence at the chateau Schoenwald in Jinosov.
At the time of. W. von Haugwitz, especially in the years 1820-1840, the most
popular and most performed author in Namest was Georg Friedrich Handel
(1685-1759).The Count Haugwitz bought extensive (unfortunatelly unfinished)
comprehensive edition of Handel s works from the composer and theater director
Samuel Arnold. He himself took care of its expansion, so the collection eventually

included 57 Handel s operas. According to the interpretative notes in scores and
in parts it is certain that the vast majority of these songs were realy performanced
in Names! The Count himself translated the libretto of Handel s compositions,
but he also modified the original works and edited them accordingly to the
ability of the chateau band and choir. Apart from Handel, works of Mozart,
Gluck, Naumannova, Haydn s or Sacchiniho, as well as compositions of various
Czech authors were played in Names! Haugwitz gradually collected more than
1,400 different operas of several authors.. Some of these works librettos originally
written in French or Italian were also translated into German. In the years
1820-1828 he gradually published the lyrics of the translations 820 - Gluck s and
Naumann s operas, Naumann s oratorios (in three volumes), 1823 - Handel,
1828 - the second volume of Handel and two volumes of Salieri s operas.
Notable musical pieces were composed by Haugwitz s bandleader Bohumir
Rieger, who worked for him from 1804 to 1808, and among other songs he also
dedicated to the Count e.g.„Ode to Music . Other Haugwitz s bandleaders were
Josef Ondrej Novotny and Jan Sander.
Personal friend of Count Haugwitz was also a composer Antonio Salieri
(1750-1825). According to his first biographer Ignaz Franz von Mosel Antonio
Salieri visited Namesf and in 1821 he dedicated his Piccolo s Requiem to
Haugwitz and this piece was performed probably just in the same year for the
first time in the chateau chapel in Names! As a birthday gift for the Count Salieri
wrote a cantata Congratulation and to the Countess Haugwitz he dedicated his
Scherzi Armonico vocal. The Count Haugwitz maintained his friendships with
Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787), with whom he met as a student, as well
as with other representatives of the Viennese music enviroment.
Also Karl Wilhelm II. Haugwitz (1797-1874) was very interested in music. He
expanded collection of music and he was the author of many songs. He focused
on a works for harp, guitar, zither, piano and vocal formation. His numerous
songs were mostly covertly and admittedly inspired and based on works of other
authors, which Karl very often processed or paraphrased. Under Karl Wilhelm,
the chateau band came to an end, in fact it was gradually transformed into the
fashionable aristocratic music salon
Currently, the Chateau Names! is a place of regular concerts, which are based
on a rich and important musical tradition. Part of the musical life are regular
concerts of the international festival Concentus Moraviae, summer multi-genre
festival Folk Holidays, summer school masterpieces Czech opera arias and songs
Moravian Masterclass and many others. The highlight of the musical productions
is a traditional concert, the program has always supported the Haugwitzs music
tradition, as well as regular Chateau Advent Concert.
