Recent depredations by jihadists against minorities in the Middle East have
unfortunately, and in the worst of circumstances, given minority communities
a much higher profile in the West than they have sometimes enjoyed. The
victimisation of non-Muslim populations in Syria and Iraq, for example, has only
served to underline the rich and venerable history in these areas of many non-
Muslim groups. Addressing a subject that - despite its currency and urgency -
is still neglected in the scholarly literature. Aptin Khanbaghi demonstrates that
the wider Islamic world yet remains indebted to the several peoples and religious
cultures that the Arabs subdued in the seventh and eighth centuries. In this
important and groundbreaking book, he discusses those groups active within
Iran - specifically Zoroastrians. Jews and Christians - that resisted assimilation
to the new Islamic order yet remained central players in the life and evolution of
their homeland. Ranging from the sixth century to the eighteenth century, the
book embraces the entire medieval and early modern eras and puts a wholly new
perspective on those non-Muslim communities which played such a defining role
