Strofis Paparoannou, associate professor of classics and director of the Medieval
Studies Program, Brown University, works on Byzantine literature, with a
focus on the rhetorical tradition. He has published a monograph on Michael
Psellos (Michael Psellos: Rhetoric and Authorship in Byzantium, Cambridge,
2013) and several articles on different aspects of the Byzantine discursive
culture. Recent work includes: a critical edition and translation of texts from
the menologion of Symeon Metaphrastes (for the Dumbarton Oaks Medieval
Library; to appear in 2017), the preparation of The Oxford Handbook of Byz-
antine Literature, and the critical edition of Psellos’ letter-collection for the
Teubner series.
Jeffrey Walker is professor and chair of the Department of Rhetoric and Writing
at the University of Texas at Austin. His interests include the theory and his-
tory of rhetoric, ancient and Byzantine rhetoric, rhetoric and poetics, and rhe-
torical education. His publications include The Genuine Teachers of This Art:
Rhetorical Education in Antiquity (2011); Rhetoric and Poetics in Antiquity
(2000); Bardic Ethos and the American Epic Poem (1989); Rhetorical Analy-
sis: A Brief Guide for Writers (with Mark Longaker, 2011); Investigating Ar-
