Summary
The monographic collection of articles “AMOR VINCIT OMNIA. Life and Work of
Konstantins Karulis” is dedicated to an eminent personality in Latvian cultural history
and science of the 20th century - Konstantins Karulis (1915-1997).
Konstantins Karulis has accomplishments in numerous fields, encompassing many
vocations:
• a journalist: in the pre-war Latvia, he was a correspondent and a member of the editorial
board of the influential newspaper “Briva Zeme” (“Free Land”, 1934 - 1940), an editor
of radiophone programme “Latvijas W/nis”(“Wave of Latvia”, 1940), a correspondent
and a member of the editorial board of the newspaper issued during World War II
“Latvijas Kareivis”( “Latvian Soldier”, 1944-1945);
• a linguist: the author of hitherto the only “Latviesu etimologijas vardnlca (“Latvian
Etymology Dictionary”, 1992). He has published a lot of articles in Latvian and
foreign books, as well as periodicals dedicated to the Latvian language history, has
been among the scientific concept creators for the academic “Latviesu literards valodas
vardnlca (“Latvian Literary Language Dictionary”, 1972-1976) and Latviesu valodas
vardnlca (“Latvian Language Dictionary”, 1987), the author of monographs Senie un
musdienu raksti” (“Ancient and Modern Writings”, 1956), and Raksts un rakstlsanas
lldzekU gadu tukstosos (“Writings and Means ofWriting Through Millennia”, 1962);
• a researcher of mythology, folklore, etnography: in 1980s, he published a series of
articles dedicated to the Latvian cult of Sun, Earth Goddess Mara, summer solstice
celebration - Midsummers Eve and its Indo-European roots, and other themes. These
articles became a positive impact that stimulated research exploring Latvian and,
more extensively, Baltic mythology;
• a literary historian and explorer of Latvian writing, publishing and book history:
K. Karulis has implemented several studies dedicated to the lesser-known or forgot-
ten authors in Latvian literature of the 17th to 19th centuries, for example, J. Reiters,
G. Elgers, G. F. Stenders, F. Brivzemnieks, and their works. He authored a contempla-
tive publication “Latviesu gramata gadsimtu gaita (“Latvian Book Throughout Cen-
turies”, 1967), “Janis Reiters un vina tulkojums (“Janis Reiters and His Translation”,
1986). He was one of the founders and an active participant in Book History Commis-
sion (1960-1990);
• an educator and historian of pedagogy;
• a promoter of stenography in Latvia and its explorer: an author and co-author of
books “Isais un atrais raksts. Kas ir stenografija” (“Shorthand and Longhand. What
is Stenography”, 1959),“Stenografija” (“Stenography”, 2 volumes, 1953-1955; a co-
author), “Stenogrdfijas vardnlca” (“Dictionary of Stenography”, 1961; a co-author);
• an author of memoirs about aperiod oftime fateful to Latvia (1939-1941): the memoirs
describe the Latvian State shortly before Soviet occupation and during the first year
of the occupation, the first pre-war president of Latvia Karlis Ulmanis and other

eminent politicians, diplomats, cultural workers of the time, with whom K. Karulis
himself was in close connection. The memoirs were published after Latvia regained its
independence in the first half of the 1990s.
The current monographic collection of articles is constituted of two parts.
The first part contains scientific writings, research dedicated to life and scientific or
applied work of Konstantins Karulis.
Academician, historian of science Janis Stradins, on the basis of the publicly lesser
known biographical details of Konstantins Karulis (his work in Latvian Academy of
Sciences and Latvian science history research, the memories of the visible post-war
leaders of scientific life, etc.), contemplates the personality traits of K. Karulis, among
which the most invaluable during the Soviet period was his ability to find employment
in the intellectual sphere despite the fact that due to his biography Karulis was dismissed
from work seven times. He had endured an exile to the Far East of the USSR, branded
as a person untrustworthy to Soviet regime. However, K. Karulis was capable, without
mentally demeaning himself and becoming a humble servant of power, to maintain an
independent posture and scientific capacity.
The article by academician, folklorist and literary scientist Janina Kursite detailedly
examines both K. Karulis’ early contribution to the literature (prose and descriptive genre),
as well as his activities in literary science and folklore studies. The analysis of K. Karulis’
war correspondence with his wife Irene Karule is also included. The war tore them apart -
Irene Karule with their children emigrated to the United States. Their correspondence was
renewed and continued throughout the post-war years - mostly, though, in the language
of Aesop, as K. Karulis had to consider his personal safety - all the private correspondence
with foreign countries was read and analyzed by the Soviet security organs.
The article by academician, linguist Ilgajansone reflects upon K. Karulis’ contribution
to science. It contains an analysis of his doctoral (at the time called “candidate of science”)
thesis written to obtain the degree in philology - “Lingvistiskie elementi latviesu valodas
stenografija” (“Linguistic Elements of the Latvian Language Shorthand”, 1959) and the
input in development of linguistics (history of writing, its development stages, Latvian
early religious literary language’s lexical particularities, etc.), briefly touching upon
Karulis’ research dedicated to the personalities in culture.
K. Karulis could fully express his love of books and history of books, writing and
publishing, as for more than a decade he worked at the Fundamental Library of the
Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR (this period is described in the article by Venta
Kocere “Konstantina. Karula darba gadi biblioteka” (“Konstantins Karulis’ Years of Work
at the Library”).
However, the most important contribution of Konstantins Karulis is the two volume
Latviesu valodas etimologijas vardnica” (“Latvian Etymology Dictionary”, 1992). Twenty
years have been dedicated to its creation. It remains an inexhaustible source of further
linguistic (also folklore and ethnology) studies. Within this monographic collection of
articles, several authors directly address the analysis of Latvian language lexical material
found in this particular dictionary authored by K. Karulis.
First of all, here are the studies by two notable linguists. University of Latvia
Professor Igors Koskins focuses his research on the issues related to etymological and

semantic reconstruction of inherited and borrowed words in Latvian language based on
etymologies of words provided in K. Karulis’ “Latvian Etymology Dictionary”. As rightly
concluded by 1. Koskins, “K. Karulis’ Dictionary is the gateway to the prehistoric world of
the Latvian word.” The UL Latvian Language Institute senior researcher Ojars Buss, in his
turn, analyzes the loanwords included in the etymology dictionary and borrowed from
the neighboring Finno-Ugric - Liv and Estonian - languages. As concluded by K. Karulis
and appraised by O. Buss, not particularly many of these exist: “The review of Finno-Ugric
loanwords analysed in Konstantins Karulisy *Latvian Etymology Dictionary currently permits
to make the assumption that Finno-Ugric loanwords still used in the Latvian literary language
might not exceed seventy words ” However, these few tens of loanwords borrowed from the
Finno-Ugric languages by Latvian language are important, reflecting the neighboring
nations’ economic and cultural contacts for many centuries.
The articles contributed by researchers — folklorists - of the newscientist generation are
centred around particular topics, selecting the lexical layer relevant to each respective field
of their research and found in the dictionary by K. Karulis, explained with its assistance
(the vocabulary associated with bread and baking is explored by Indra Cekstere, but the
traditional medicine and its treatments - in the article by leva Ancevska).
K. Karulis received an education of a lawyer, even doubly educated in this field, since
the diploma obtained before World War II was not recognized, and in he had to re-take
the exams in Soviet times. Lawyer and folklore researcher Kristine Rotbaha has traced
K. Karulis’ biographical paths and difficulties encountered on his way to a law degree
under the conditions of Soviet political system.
Specialists of pedagogical sciences, leading researcher Aida Kruze (UL Faculty
of Education, Psychology and Art) and Alida Zigmunde (Riga Technical University)
examine K. Karulis’ pedagogical work, as well as the conclusions about education issues
revealed in his publications, including his opinion regarding the role of traditions in
upbringing. K. Karulis’ collection of personal items, manuscripts and books, donated to
the UL Museum of History of Pedagogy, has also been described.
Historian, senior researcher at the UL Institute of Philosophy and Sociology Kaspars
Zellis, on the basis of Latvian archive materials, in his study analyzes the unenviable
wartime destiny of K. Karulis and his contemporaries - journalists, writers workingas war
reporters. They could not remain neutral - either they had to follow the retreating Soviet
occupation troops in 1941, or to become swallowed by the Nazi German propaganda
divisions. In their correspondence from the battleground they still had to uphold the
almost impossible ultimate goal - the idea of Latvia’s independence. Those who emigrated
at the end of the war, in memoirs, literary or scientific work were able to express their views
regarding both totalitarian regimes. Those who, like K. Karulis, remained in Soviet Latvia,
had to reckon with the possible repressions and strive to live without losing the human
face and dignity. One had to take into account the trade-offs, and K. Karulis also had to
live through that. The life tragedy of these visible, active, proven journalists, writers of the
pre-war time, — the former war reporters - remaining in Soviet Latvia, is reflected in the
article by Kaspars Zellis.
What love is, what human affection is to those who have been dragged into the war,
remains a rhetorical and unanswerable question, when one must first think of one’s

survival. At the same time, the love of family or beloved person helped many to wade
through the dirty mud of war. It was the case of K. Karulis - the correspondence with his
wife Irène became perhaps the main source of strength, enabling to survive the exile to the
Far East and to maintain a strong spiritual bond with the family even living and working
behind the Iron Curtain in Soviet Riga. The article by historian, sociologist Vita Zelce is
devoted to Konstantins Karulis’ wife Irene Karule, who raised their three children alone
in emigration. The attachment of their descendants to Latvian culture - already the third
generation living in the United States - is worthy of admiration. Irène Karule for many
years worked in the radio “Voice of America” Latvian editorial office. The voices of herself
and the others who had broken away from the Soviet grip into the free world held hope
for those forced to exist in miserable conditions of the occupied Latvia. In 1976, Irène
Karule became the head of “Voice of America” Latvian editorial office and remained in this
position for ten years. Unfortunately, we no longer can ask Konstantins Karulis himself
what he felt, secretly listening to the “Voice of America”, which at the same time was also
his wife’s voice -many thousands of kilometers away. V. Zelce s article demonstrates the
ability to remain together despite being apart and living in two opposing political systems -
the free world (the United States) and the one with curtailed human rights (USSR) - to
maintain confidence in the rebirth of Latvian independence and the possibility of meeting
again, and also to see it come true.
The first part of the collection of articles is concluded with the memories of K. Karulis
from his exile to the Soviet Far East, as well as recollections contributed by K. Karulis’
daughters and granddaughters about their father and grandfather.
The second part of this monographic collection contains valuable articles by
Konstantins Karulis himself, previously published only in periodicals, dedicated
to folklore, mythology, ethnography, as well as reprinted memoirs accompanied by
commentary of scientists. K. Karulis’ essays on Latvian folklore and mythology were
published in the press during the late 1980s, when the Soviet Latvia gradually gained
opportunities to express the opinions more and more freely, and increased liberty to voice
uncensored scientific hypotheses. K. Karulis memoirs, in turn, permit to observe events
topical in the pre-war Latvian politics and suppressed in Soviet years, witnessed and
partaken of by K. Karulis himself during his time as a journalist.
Unlike many other people involved in cultural life, who had the misfortune to spend a
large proportion of their lives under the conditions of Soviet totalitarian state, Konstantins
Karulis succeeded to preserve and develop his wide range of research interests and
perception - analysing Latvian language and folklore in the Indo-European context,
viewing Latvian literature and its authors not in isolation, but within shared European
space of literary developments and movements, and assessing the pre-war Latvian policy
in the light of global political events.
The title given to the collection of articles - Amor vincit omnia - expresses the most
important and enduring principle guiding life and work of Konstantins Karulis - “Love
conquers all”.
