It works through the gospel in narrative sequence providing a 'philosophical narrative reading'. In each section of the gospel Troels Engberg-Pedersen raises discusses philosophical questions. He compares John with Paul (in philosophy) and Mark (in narrative) to offer a new reading of the transmitted text of the Fourth Gospel. Of these two profiles, the narrative one is strongly influenced by the literary critical paradigm. Moreover, by attending carefully to a number of narratological features, one may come to see that the transmitted text in fact hangs together much more coherently than scholarship has been willing to see. The other profile is specifically philosophical. Scholarship has been well aware that the Fourth Gospel has what one might call a philosophical dimension. John and Philosophy: A New Reading the Fourth Gospel calls for a
return to the text in a sanitized historical criticism that sets aside a large
number of traditional issues concerning Literarkritik (source criticism),
Religionsgeschichte (history of religion), and the Johannine community.
Drawing on insights from narrative criticism, the book articulates a narrative
philosophical approach which allows the reader to find both literary and
thematic coherence in John 1, 2-4, 5—6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-17, and
18—20. An analysis of John 1:1-34 leads to the formulation of a Johannine
cosmological theory of the combined presence of (cognitive) logos (the divine
plan) and (material) pneuma (spirit) in Jesus—along the lines of a similar
combination to be found in contemporary Stoicism. Troels Engberg-Pedersen
shows the Gospel’s use of this theory in its major sections to bring out
the epistemological and ethical underpinnings of its basic theme: that Jesus
was not fully understood during his lifetime, while he alone was in possession
of the pneuma, but only became fully understood upon his death and
resurrection, once initial believers had themselves received the pneuma. In the
last two chapters, Engberg-Pedersen addresses in this light the much debated
questions of John’s relationship with the Synoptic Gospels (primarily Mark),
Paul, and Judaism, his use of imagery, and his eschatology. Throughout the
book, Engberg-Pedersen rejects finding elements of Platonism and ‘realized
eschatology’ in John.
