SUMMARY
The fates of the Jewish communities in the area of Czech Silesia is not very
different from that of other Czech and Moravian Jewish communities. For
centuries, in the Silesian part of our territory, Jews have also constituted an
integral part of the local urban communities. Despite some minor incidents and
anti-Semitic outpourings, which mainly resulted from the deteriorated economic
situation of the non-Jewish population or ethnic problems, which were ubiquitous
in the multinational Czech Silesia, the Jews were respected by the majority of
population for the time being, because they were aware of their importance.
Living conditions of the Jews in Czech Silesia began to deteriorate already in
the second half of the 30s. Commensurate with the escalating demands of the
Nazi Germany forcing the Czechoslovaks to withdraw from the Czechoslovakian
borderlands, the anti-Semitism caused by Nazi propaganda grew stronger also in
the local area. Especially in the Silesian region of Opava, where the German
population clearly prevailed, the anti-Jewish riots proliferated, their organizers
being the Nazi sympathizers. But their co-religionists in Cieszyn and Ostrava
regions could not feel totally safe either. Even the Nazi persecution of Jews didn't
discourage the Czech and Polish radicals from constantly accusing them of
sympathies to Germans. Jew-hatred was intensified by the influx of Jewish
refugees from the Empire and later from Austria, who sought salvation from Nazi
persecution in Czechoslovakia.
After signing the Munich Agreement in late September 1938 there was a
definite turning point and for all Jews without exception a peaceful life ended for
a long period of time.
From October 1938 until May 1945 the development in majority of Czech
Silesia was completely separated from development in the rest of the Czech
lands. Its individual parts were occupied by Nazi Germany at different times,
which implied their inclusion under different administrative units. Occupational
circumstances differed in each of these parts and differences were also reflected
in the approach of the occupational authorities towards the Jewish population,
even though the line of occupational policy in the ”solution of the Jewish

question" headed everywhere to the final stage in the form of mass deportations
of Jews and their violent physical destruction in extermination camps.
In Sudeten County, where the Silesian region of Opava was incorporated to,
we see essentially the same line of repressive development, as was in the Empire.
In fact, since the takeover by the German army in October 1938, imperial laws
began to be applied in occupied borderland and Nazis began to implement their
anti-Semitic program. The highlight of terror in the first months of the occupation
was called "Kristallnacht", during which many synagogues and chapels,
cemeteries were burnt and Jewish shops, homes and apartments were destroyed.
Given the significant decline of the Jewish population in the first months of
occupation, the local occupation authorities had the solution "of the Jewish
question" greatly facilitated.
Similar problems did not have to bother their colleagues at the Hlučin region.
It was because the local area had become a „Judenrein“ even before the arrival of
the Nazi troops.
Only Jews, who found themselves in the wake of Polish annexation of the
Cieszyn Silesia to the Polish territory could feel relatively safe for the time being
as well as their co-religionists from a small part of the Czech Silesia territory,
which still remained within Czechoslovakia. Although they were not inhibited by
the Nazi anti-Jewish measures yet and also they were not subject to the usual
terror in the territories ceded to Germany, the anti-Jewish restrictions of the
authoritarian regimes that were in both states at the turn of 1938/1939 in power,
did not guarantee them hope for a further carefree life. Former openness,
tolerance and friendliness towards the Jewish ethnicity thus gradually waned and
anti-Jewish sentiment resonated in the Czech and Polish societies even before the
arrival of the Nazis.
Yet already in March 1939, the German troops first entered the territory of the
rest of the Czech countries and a few months later also Poland. The Jews, who
did not emigrate in time, anticipated the same tragic fate as their co-religionists in
the Empire and the Sudeten district.
Despite a number of different features that can be registered in the approach
of the occupational authorities to solve the Jewish question during the war years,
we see essentially the same line of repressive development in different parts of
the occupied Czech Silesia - whether in the Sudetenland, the Protectorate of
Bohemia and Moravia or the Cieszyn Silesia, the persecution of Jews, like in the
Empire, was characterized by the development of initial withdrawal of rights
through expropriation of their property and deportation to mass murder.

We can find differences rather in the pace of asserting the individual anti-
Jewish measures that were designed to exclude Jews from the society, and the
toughness of the methods used, which influenced the rate of violence. The
intensity of the persecutory procedures was determined mainly by the
occupational status of the relevant area, which was based on the plans of the Nazi
leadership. The speed with which the Nuremberg racial laws and other anti-
Jewish measures were introduced in the Sudeten county, i.e. on the territory of
one of the imperial counties, were very different from the Protectorate of
Bohemia and Moravia, which had at least formally an autonomous status. In
Cieszyn Silesia, which was like the entire Polish part of Upper Silesia obtained by
an act of war, the occupiers were progressing against the Polish and Jewish
population from the beginning with unimaginable brutality and the state of
emergency was accompanied by constant terror applied throughout the whole
occupation. Other differences we find e.g. in the forms and pace of Aryzation
process when the Jewish property was being expropriated.
Although the persecution was almost unbearable for Jews in the early years of
the occupation, the Nazi anti-Jewish policy was until 1942 a sort of preparation
for the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question." The physical destruction of Jews
in the Empire and in the occupied territories, occurred obviously earlier too; yet
after the Wannsee Conference in January 1942, the Nazis definitively moved
from persecution and intimidation to systematic extermination.
In the Cieszyn Silesia, the question of the expulsion of Jews was basically
solved in advance - i.e. by their concentration in the Jewish ghettos in Upper
Silesia or by the General Government in 1939-1941. At the end of 1941 the
deportation of Jews to extermination camps were introduced, and therefore the
Jews from Upper Silesia (including those from the Cieszyn region) are among the
first victims of the Holocaust. At the time, the majority of the
Protectorate and Sudeten German Jews were only awaiting the deportation
from their home towns and villages. Even they were during the years 1941-1944
progressively concentrated in the Terezin ghetto, where they then began to leave
on the transports to concentration and extermination camps in the East.
Although the Nazis from all parts of the occupied Czech Silesia considered
the local Jewish question essentially resolved at the end of 1943, there were still
some Jews — they were mainly half-breed Jews or Jews from mixed marriages.
Also their fate was soon to be sealed in the death camps. Only the defeat of Nazi
Germany prevented the completion of this terrible crime.

After liberation, only few of the surviving Jews returned to their pre-war
homes. The returnees had a very hard life after the war here. Not only did they
often lose all their relatives, but it was very hard to regain their pre-war status or
stolen property. Neither the renewed Jewish community, whose membership went
through a drastic reduction during the war, has never reached its pre-war
significance.
War and Nazi anti-Jewish fury in fact meant the disappearance of most of the
Jewish communities in the Czech Silesia. After the war, at least some Jewish
communities were able to restore their activity, but without much relation to the
pre-war communities. Neither the time of their operation, therefore, did not last
long and in the late 60s, their activities were under the pressure from the
communist regime and the lack of members finally terminated. To this day, mere
debris remained from the once so populous communities of Jews in the Czech
Silesia.
