Epilogue
Twenty-nine years ago, Zadužbine of Kosovo was published in
Serbian to serve as a sign, symbol, reminder, and warning to all
those lulled to sleep by the habits of comfortable living and careless
thinking. It aimed to awaken the memories and call to mind the
truth of the Christian Orthodox character and spiritual proprie-
torship of Kosovo and Metohija. The basis for this is the Kosovo
ethos and the Christian heritage of Old Serbia. The main feature of
this ethos is that it does not call upon a misanthropic or armed
rebellion against any one; rather it is directed toward awakening,
stimulating, and resurrecting among the people the true spiritual-
ity that originally adorned the Kosovo Covenant.
This new monograph, appearing in 2016, is yet another impartial
reminder of the complete truth about Kosovo and Metohija, in the
past and the present, and for the common future of all in Kosovo.
This book contains selected imagery, literary and historical facts
which, mutually linked, show the importance of Kosovo and Me-
tohija for the national and spiritual existence of the Serbian people.
The section on imagery uncovers the richness of the historical
memorials of Kosovo and Metohija which represent a unique ex-
panse in the Christian oecumene. An entire constellation of mon-
uments is made up by the churches of Peć Patriarchate, Gračanica,
the Cathedral of Ljeviša, Dečani, as well as the indestructible traces
of Hvosno, Banjska, Koriša and the Holy Archangels. The literary
section covers an anthological selection of poetry and texts in prose
concerning Kosovo, arising through the centuries up to today, and
is illustrated with motifs from Kosovo and with works by past and
modern Serbian artists.
The part on history begins with scholarly approaches to certain
periods of the most early and more recent past, and continues with
a selection of original written testimonials, documents and other
authentic material which, in content, bears witness to the fate of
the monuments and the Serbian nation on Kosovo and Metohija.
This remarkable spatial occupation is narratively reprised in the
book itself, which concludes with testimonies about the violence
inflicted on these buildings and their clergy and congregations
from the fifteenth century to the present.
A collection of charters from the Middle Ages concerning his-
torical monuments of Kosovo, a summary of cities and castles of
Kosovo from the 11th to the 15th century, as well as an assemblage
of memorials of the Serbian Church on Kosovo and Metohija (XIII-
-XX c.), are being published for the first time, and are of exceptional
importance for Serbian cultural history. Around 1,300 listed mon-
asteries, sites of former churches and other consecrated places,
built and torn down, restored or already neglected, represent up to
this time the fullest directory of sacred remains and signs on the
Kosovo region of the Diocese of Raška and Prizren.
The detailed documentary section contains authentic sources
and testimonies, especially for the period between the 15th and the
21st centuries: from Ottoman listings of places they came upon, with
population, reports of missions from the Vatican and other sourc-
es, diplomatic acts, correspondences, memoranda, on-the-spot
testimonials from more recent and post-war times, up to today.
From the diverse and rich contents of this book, in which all of
the texts have been critically selected and prepared, one can see
that Kosovo is the central land of the Serbian nation, both in its
historical past and in the living destiny of its present. The region
of Kosovo and Metohija, which is, due to its political and geo-
graphical position, considered of “key importance” for the entire
Balkan peninsula, has been settled by the Serbs since the 7th cen-
tury—which all the scientifically relative archeological, linguistic
and historical sources speak of. The ethnical homogeneity of Ser-
bians was a prerequisite for the rise of Kosovo and Metohija to the
role of the main spiritual, governmental, and cultural territory of
Serbian history in the Middle Ages. The Serbian Orthodox Church,
since its autonomy in 1219, and after moving of the Archdiocese to
Pec, contributed to make and to permanently hold the Kosovo
Metohija region as the homeland of the Serbian people, the Holy
Land of its spiritual and historical existence.
On June 15/28,1389, the famous Battle of Kosovo took place, one
of the most fateful battles for the European Christian world: the
unstoppable Ottoman invasion which was led personally by Sultan
Murad, was awaited on Kosovo Field by the Serbian Prince Lazar,
and the clash was so bloody that both leaders on either side were
killed in it, which was unheard of up to that time. Like the battles
of Poitiers or of Kulikovo, so also the Battle of Kosovo remained
for the consciousness of the Serbian Christian people a symbol of
struggle for “the honorable Cross,” and for “the Kingdom of Heav-
en.” Kosovo, therefore, is not a myth but a reality of a historical
destiny, which continues through today. According to that destiny,
the lost battle is not a defeat, but rather a challenge, through suf-
fering, to persevere and see salvation through faith in God.
The homogeneity of the Serbian people on Kosovo and Metohij a
did not basically change even in the period of the strengthening of
Ottoman power in these regions in the middle of the 15th century,
which is also proved by the Turkish “defteri”—a listing of the pop-
ulation (included in this book). These territories of Old Serbia do not
change their status even in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1557, the
Pec Patriarchate was re-established, having an important role in
the resistance of the Serbian people in accepting the Ottoman rule
and Islamization.
In the Austro-Turkish wars of 1683-1690 and 1717-1731, the Serbs
were en masse on the Christian side. After the defeat of the Aus-
trian army, the “Great Migration” of Serbians into the Danube val-
ley took place under the Patriarchs Arsenije III (1690) and Arseni-
je IV(i737) when tens of thousands of Serbians fled Kosovo and
Metohija in fear of revenge by the Turks. Even after this, the major-
ity of the Serbian population remained; and all the way up to the
middle of the 18th century, Kosovo was still a homogenous and
heavily inhabited Serbian territory. Only after the 18”1 century did
Albanians penetrate from their mountains into Kosovo and Me-
tohija, charged by Islamization, that they might afterwards, rein-
forced by the politics of the Turks towards Serbs, turn the migra-
tions of Albanians into their massive colonization of Kosovo. Is-
lamized Albanians received the special role of protector of the Ot-
toman Empire after the Serbian uprisings (1804 and 1815), having a
powerful effect on the Christian peoples of the enslaved Balkans,
especially the Greeks. On Kosovo, a yet greater terror was intro-
duced, marked by a clear plan for exterminating Serbians from the
entire Old Serbia. The carrying out of that plan was entrusted by
the Turkish administration to the “police of the Kingdom.”
The Serbian and Montenegrin War of Liberation against Turkey
in 1876-1877 and 1877-1878 carries also the meaning of the first
serious confrontation of Serbians with the Albanians, who, even
with arms, protect “the patient of the Bosphorus.” At that time, the
Serbs freed part of Kosovo, but by the Russian-Turkish Peace in
Adrianople in 1878 were forced to pull back. The Serbian popula-
tion was thereafter subjected to new revengeful pogroms, which had
an organized character in the Albanian “Prizren League,” founded
in 1878 under the auspices of the Ottoman Porte (government). It
was at that time that the concept of a “Great Albania” was conceived

for the first time, aimed at the Balkan States which were preparing
to liberate their fellow-peoples from Turkish enslavement.
The period from the Berlin Congress of 1878 until the Balkan
War of Liberation in 1912 is marked by an even stronger persecu-
tion and physical extermination of Serbians from Kosovo and Me-
tohija. It was only in this period that the ethnic balance on the
territory of Old Serbia was ended to the detriment of the Serbians.
In those 30 years, more than 150.000 people emigrated to Serbia.
The diplomatic measures of the government of Serbia for protec-
tion from Albanian oppression of Serbians on Kosovo did not bear
fruit, which authentic documents speak of (and which are in abun-
dance in this book, even if it is, due to the volume of the book, only a
fraction of archive material).
The Serbs liberated Kosovo and its holy sites at the end of 1912,
but due also to the temporary Austro-German and Bulgarian oc-
cupation during the Second World War, when the enemy support-
ed Albanians in anti-Serb activity in Yugoslavia, created in 1918,
the relations on Kosovo, disturbed through centuries-long enslave-
ment under the Turks, begin to change. Thus, between the two
Wars, there was an attempted change in the numeric situation of
Serbians on Kosovo through the carrying out of agrarian reforms
and colonization. Around 60,000 Serbs were moved in, onto more
often than not untilled and open land, and the Albanian popula-
tion, its earlier privileges revoked, immigrated in part to Turkey
(the number of immigrants does not exceed 45,000).
The Albanian national minority awaited en masse the Nazi oc-
cupation as its liberation after the fall of Yugoslavia in April of 1941.
Under the guidance of the Fascist Italian administration, a “Great
Albania” was created, with the goal of driving the Serbians from
Kosovo and the realization of a “First League of Prizren,” high-
lighted by the former Occupier, the Turkey of Osmanli. In 1943, a
“Second League of Prizren” was created and it “balanced” at 70,000
forced immigrated Serbians, among which were the native-born
and not just the colonists. After the war many of them were forbid-
den by the new government to return to Kosovo.
In the federal organization of Yugoslavia, proclaimed in the de-
cisions of the highest political body of the Peoples Liberation Move-
ment during the war itself—the creation of autonomous regions
was not provided in any of the six formed Republics in the new
State. However, in the post-war decisions of the Comintern, which
obligated its members, Kosovo-Metohija is mentioned among the
8 federal units—republics which were to be created after the dis-
integration of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. As soon as the war was
over, an “Autonomous territory of Kosovo and Metohija” was es-
tablished in the frame of the Republic of Serbia, even if the terri-
tory of those geographical regions never had any type of historical,
political, or administrative particulars. According to the census of
1948, the Albanian national minority on Kosovo and Metohija made
up 8.10% of the population of the Republic of Serbia; in the newly-
created autonomous region, however, the relationship of the na-
tional structure all at once turned around and a minority became
a majority of the population in the separated-from-Serbia terri-
tory, while the Serbs, even if a majority nation in their own moth-
er Republic, become a minority on Kosovo and Metohija, in spite
of being three times more numerous (27,30%) than the Albanians—
had Serbia remained administratively homogenous, as did all the
other Yugoslav Republics.
The listed facts show the essence of the alterations on Kosovo
and Metohija. They fundamentally represent a return to the condi-
tions before 1912, when the Serbs, under the Ottoman occupation,
were a subordinated and enslaved people and when the Albanians
were already masters of a land which was not theirs and which
they wished to make ethnically pure. The sources and testimonies
from 1912 to 1990 demonstrate to what degree and by what means
the ethnic Albanians realized their goals, and shows that the Al-
banization of Kosovo did not begin yesterday and that the expel-
ling the Serbs from their centuries-old land is more and more ef-
fective, besides all the attempts to better the situation and to put an
end to “Albanian nationalism.” The number of forced immigrated
and driven out Serbs in just the two decades of 1970 and 1980 ex-
ceeds a number of 200,000 souls. The numerically reduced Serbian
memorials in the area of their numerically reduced faithful remain,
forbidden to massively, in demonstrations, immigrate, so that the
individual forced immigrations, which have not stopped, are less
noticeable. The included photographs at the end of this book were
taken from the press, as they speak well enough for themselves
about the position and survival of the Serbian nation on Kosovo
and Metohija, in this part of Europe.
Therefore, as a result of a number of historical, political, eco-
nomic, demographic, and other factors, the situation in Kosovo
has become a dangerous generator of the most recent crisis in the
Balkans. In the culmination of the wars that followed the breakup
of Yugoslavia, the “Christian” nations in NATO chose Easter J999
to bomb Christian Serbia into submission and end Serbian control
of Kosovo. In 2008 Kosovo declared itself independent from Ser-
bia. The rich cultural and Christian heritage that survived Otto-
man and communist rule is now at risk and targeted for destruc-
tion in spite of UN protection.
This is why the Serbian Orthodox Church is at this moment so
deeply concerned about the fate of Kosovo and Metohija, all the
human beings who live there, and all the holy shrines that exist
there. At the beginning of the year 2000, the international com-
munity apparently began to realize that the attacks by Albanians
were not just the result of furious revenge for violence committed
during the time of the conflict but have the clear intent of expelling
all the non-Albanians from Kosovo and Metohija. However, no
concrete measures have been undertaken to change the situation
on the ground. Serbs have survived primarily in a few enclaves,
while the biggest cities, except Mitrovica, have been emptied al-
most entirely of their Serb populations. In some cities, such as
Priština, Gnjilane, and Orahovac, only scattered groups remain,
surviving under the continuous protection of United Nations In-
terim Administration Mission in Kosovo. The destruction of Ser-
bian Orthodox churches and monasteries, and the eradication of
cemeteries and cultural monuments are part of a broader Alba-
nian strategy, whose goal is to change not only the demographic
but also the cultural and historical identity of the province. Newly
revised Albanian history and the educational system are working
in tandem to impose a pseudo-identity upon some of our great
shrines, such as Dečani, the Patriarchate of Peć and the Bogorod-
ica Ljeviška Cathedral in Prizren.
The editors and publisher of this book wish to express gratitude
to all the participants in this work and to those who, in many special
ways, helped. We have benefited from the assistance of many peo-
ple and the support of many institutions. The outstanding illustra-
tions in this book have been chosen to mirror the full grandeur of
this glorious age in every medium of art and in every corner of Old
Serbia. The high points are undeniably the glittering painting in the
Patriarchate of Peć and the soaring architecture of Gračanica and
Dečani. Yet, the true artistic wealth of Old Serbia becomes ever
more apparent when one considers the abundance and variety of
the lesser-known treasures included among the reproductions.
Reporting on endangered Serbs and Serbian Christian heritage
in Kosovo and Metohija, we were compelled by our conscience to
raise up our voice in defence of the spiritual and physical existence
of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.
Let this volume serve as proof of our gratitude to those unknown
creators for the immeasurably rich heritage they have left us and
to those who still remain on this terra sacra, in spite of all the dif-
ficulties.
Beyond peripheral differences and worldly interactions and
views, beyond the logic of West and East—the Christian heritage
of Kosovo and Metohija testifies to a sign of the love of God. This
heritage, like an outburst in the stillness, dissipates the deceitful-
ness of delusion. Eventually, it grants the truth of life as a cherish-
ing of freedom and harmony for everybody on this terra sacra.
