THE HUMANITIES IN THE UKRAINIAN SSR
(WESTERN REGIONS) IN 1944-1991: MODERN
UKRAINIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY
The development of an independent Ukrainian state gave a power-
ful impetus to the formation of the new historiography, the study of the
humanities in the western regions of the USSR in the postwar years.
The social and political life of postwar Ukraine did not go out of party-
political control. The Communist ideology totally influenced the social
consciousness of the population.
Into the basis of contemporary scientific developments there inte-
grated Marxism-Leninism in Stalin’s interpretation as a methodological
basis of all sciences, especially social ones. The purpose of the research
provides a specific comprehensive study of the Ukrainian historiography
of the humanities in the USSR (western regions) in 1944-1991 which
gives the solutions to the following research objectives: to highlight the
historiography of the Ukrainian history in the second half of the XX cen-
tury, to analyze the research condition of peculiarities of philosophic and
religious studies functioning, to determine the state of reflection in the
scientific literature of Ukrainian philological study and art development,
to justify perspectives of further academic historical problem researches.
In Soviet times the study of modern history of Western Ukrainian
lands were under the watchful eye of censorship. The socio-political
processes in the Ukrainian lands in the inter-war Poland were half-cov-
ered, the activity of national political parties was suppressed. The prob-
lem of “Western Ukrainian issues” in the foreign policy of the Russian
Empire in the early XX century was not an individual object for scien-
tific coverage works of Soviet scientists. A common feature of reviewed
academic papers of the Soviet period is that they displayed the official
doctrine of the Communist Party and the Soviet government, strongly
boasted the principles of socialism and the Soviet way of life.
The main attention is focused on the practice of socialist economy,
bringing to a successful resolution of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR
such fundamental problems as the country’s industrialization, collec-
tivization of agriculture. The weakening of ideological pressure on the
humanities during the perestroika legitimized many fundamental ques-
tions of the study, particularly of ethnic relations, the modern ethno-
cultural processes, the role of ethnic and cultural traditions in the mod-
ern system of culture, and also the relationship between tradition and

innovation, which in its turn has diversified and expanded the research
search and broadened the topics of ethnographic studies.
Modern Ukrainian historiography still has the lack of specialists and
authoritative scientific schools on the history of foreign countries; the
civilizational model of world history, modern and postmodern meth-
odological guidance to grasp the cultural and spiritual values of other
peoples in anthropological terms are slowly digested.
It should be noted that despite the strict subordination of Soviet phi-
losophy to the political and ideological goals of the totalitarian com-
munist system, in Ukraine there occasionally appeared the study, the
authors of which managed to circumvent the official bans and strict
guidelines. A striking example of this phenomenon may be the career
of the prominent Ukrainian philosopher, director of the Institute of Phi-
losophy of the Ukrainian SSR P. Kopnin, who in the years of Khrushchev
Thaw refreshed philosophical life in Ukraine, launching new directions
of philosophical studies, particularly in the field of modern formal logic,
psychology, scientific creativity, scientific knowledge and especially in
the field of the history of Ukrainian philosophy. If philosophical science
in the USSR has undergone some progress, it has in the field of histori-
cal and philosophical studies, especially in the field of the research in
the history of Ukrainian philosophy. In the second half of the 80’s of the
XX century the Ukrainian philosophical study is experiencing new qual-
itative changes. There began the study and realizing the philosophical
topics not having prospects in the previous period. The topical issue was
a gradual shift from Marxist methodological principles and search for
suitable alternatives. There is no doubt that the improvements of the
Ukrainian philosophers in the years of the Perestroika went beyond the
official ideology and objectively undermined the foundations of ideo-
logical philosophy. It prepared the theoretical background, on which
the Ukrainian philosophical study in the last decade of the last century
in the conditions of independent democratic Ukraine began to develop.
Due to the efforts of Ukrainian scientists the distortion and ideologi-
cal stratification of the previous religious historiography were removed.
Modern historians are unanimous that during the Khrushchev “thaw”
inherent variability in the choice of basic strategies - from moder-
ate liberalization to forced anti-Church campaign. During this period
there was a return to the administrative methods of struggle against
religion. The authorities believed that religion hinders the construc-
tion of communism. In the Soviet period the contents of religious stud-
ies determined the documents of the Communist Party and the Soviet

researchers focused on the “exploiting” role of the church in society,
many pages of the church history were suppressed. In 70-80 years of
the XX century a comprehensive study of atheism as a spiritual phenom-
enon was first conducted that to some extent went beyond ideological
apologetics disclosed the real foundation of the atheistic worldview,
valid aspects of its influence on the spiritual culture of society in general
and individuals in particular.
Assessing the formation and development of Ukrainian philology
from the mid 50’s to late 80’s, of the XX century the Ukrainian schol-
ars made quite right conclusions: although the use of the Ukrainian
language was deliberately limited, linguistics was developed relatively
easily (except for some industries dependent from ideological obses-
sive government regulations). Linguistics has provided ordinary speak-
ers everything they need to master the literary language and to speak it
perfectly. It didn’t just elevate the language culture, but also supported
the Ukrainian national consciousness in the conditions of statelessness
and Russification. Our linguistics was during this time an extensive dis-
cipline, coped with all the tasks that the society gave them and lifted to
a higher level. Linguists proved that by their communication capabili-
ties the Ukrainian language is not inferior to other Slavic languages, and
belongs to the most developed world literary languages. Soviet postwar
literary studies developed under the conditions of strict censorship and
content limitations. Modern scholars in the study identified the role of
the Sixtiers in upgrading Ukrainian literature, works emergence in psy-
chology of creativity, genre study, poetics, critic studies, literary method-
ology analyzed the creativity of analyst of Ukrainian poetry M. Ilnytsky.
Until a consensus there reached modern scholars that “philosofiza-
tion” of the Ukrainian literature, which gradually got rid of illustrative
character of 60-70’s of the XX century when was based mainly on the
theory of reflection, getting pure forms of “gnoseologism” more clearly
assimilated ontological dimensions of art creativity. And the process
would not be possible without the use of phenomenological herme-
neutics principles and practices. The shift from literary materialistic
thoughts of Marxism-Leninism interest was followed by the interest
in the poetry of the XVTI-XVIII centuries, the essence and mechanisms
of mythological consciousness. From the early 90’s the native literary
criticism is directed to a broad understanding of the topical problems of
the Ukrainian literature both in its national inherently underlying cause
and in a global, European context.

In the system of Ukrainian folk study ethnology, folklore and art his-
tory are important components of social life and branches of study that
directly shape and define the mentality and way of nation spirituality
and in the important periods of the history of Ukraine they become the
exponents of national and cultural renaissance. Folklore science suf-
fered the most during the Soviet times. Despite a large number of publi-
cations of folklore material during the 40-80’s there still remained a lot
of “blank spots”, obscure and controversial issues in the study about folk
art. Ukrainian researchers found that the post-war folklore, as in previ-
ous stages, developed under the conditions of extreme confrontation
and suffered a significant effect of purely political processes.
The analysis of historiographical sources about the development of
Ukrainian art-science showed that modern scientists had identified the
key principles, types and areas of fine arts, had revealed the dynamics
of ideological changes during the second half of the XX century. In the
60-80’s the authorities tried to encourage art experts to social and po-
litical activities, but not so much to form their organizational capabili-
ties as for the purpose to use their potential for the establishment of the
socialist system. Therefore alternative to the officially approved form of
public activity the power didn’t support and severely persecuted.
The discovery of various new forms of world art in the early 90’s of
the XX century revived the search experimentation, provided the strong
positions of Ukrainian art in the future. The transformation of avant-
garde and cultural and artistic environment in Ukraine in the XX cen-
tury, the arts and cultural aspects of the evolution of non-conformism in
the middle - in the second half of the XX century contributed to the for-
mation of contemporary visual arts during the Ukrainian independence
and its entry into the global process. Non-conformism as if accumulated
hidden potential energy, constant and quite natural desire of creative
freedom. Thus, in the second half of the XX century there appeared a co-
hort of scientists, art historians, whose true values were paramount. The
formation of the fundamental and integral fabric of national art started.
Thus, at the present stage of development of historiography before
Ukrainian scholars there appears an important task: taking into consid-
eration the current level of knowledge, existing information base and
modern theoretical and methodological innovations to continue the
reconstruction of the history of historical, philological, literature, phi-
losophy, religion and art studies in the western regions of the USSR of
the second half of the XX century.
