Zusammenfassung: | This book provides an innovative approach to the Hispano-Roman Christian poet Prudentius and his poetry. It is a breakthrough in Prudentian scholarship which unifies the differing disciplines of history, archaeology, literature and art history in arguing that Prudentius and his envisaged Spanish audience cannot be fully understood in isolation from their environment in late fourth- and early fifth-century Spain. Paula Hershkowitz focuses on Prudentius' Peristephanon, his collection of verses celebrating the deaths of martyrs, and places these poems within the context of Prudentius' world, uniquely employing material, visual and textual remains as evidence for its religious, social and cultural affiliations. It also draws on this material evidence to contextualise Prudentius' awareness of the significance of the visual as a means of promoting beliefs against the background of this crucial formative period in religious history when many of his Spanish audience were not yet fully committed to the Christian faith |

This book provides an innovative approach to the Hispano-Roman Christian poet Prudentius and his poetry. It also draws on this material evidence to contextualise Prudentius' awareness of the significance of the visual as a means of promoting beliefs against the background of this crucial formative period in religious history when many of his Spanish audience were not yet fully committed to the Christian faith Prudentius / 348- / Criticism and interpretation Prudentius Clemens, Aurelius 348-405 Peristephanon (DE-588)4233235-7 gnd rswk-swf Prudentius Clemens, Aurelius 348-405 (DE-588)118596829 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Martyrs in literature Christian poetry, Latin / History and criticism Spätantike (DE-588)4124227-0 gnd rswk-swf Christliche Lyrik (DE-588)4010111-3 gnd rswk-swf Zeithintergrund (DE-588)4128644-3 gnd rswk-swf Spanien Spain / History / To 711 Spain / Social conditions / To 1800 Spanien (DE-588)4055964-6 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Prudentius Clemens, Aurelius 348-405 (DE-588)118596829 p Spanien (DE-588)4055964-6 g Christliche Lyrik (DE-588)4010111-3 s Spätantike (DE-588)4124227-0 s 2\p DE-604 Prudentius Clemens, Aurelius 348-405 Peristephanon (DE-588)4233235-7 u Zeithintergrund (DE-588)4128644-3 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-14960-1 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-316-60405-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316569917 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
