Zusammenfassung: | Over half the world lives under authoritarian regimes. For these people, the opportunity to engage in politics moves outside the state's territory. Mobilising across borders, diasporas emerge to challenge such governments. This book offers an in-depth examination of the internal politics of transnational mobilisation. Studying Rwandan and Zimbabwean exiles, it exposes the power, interests, and unexpected agendas behind mobilisation, revealing the surprising and ambivalent role played by outsiders. Far from being passive victims waiting for humanitarian assistance, refugees engage actively in political struggle. From Rwandans resisting their repatriation, to Zimbabweans preventing arms shipments, political exiles have diverse aims and tactics. Conversely, the governments they face also deploy a range of transnational strategies, and those that purport to help them often do so with hidden agendas. This shifting political landscape reveals the centrality of transnationalism within global politics, the historical and political contingency of diasporas, and the precarious agency of refugees |

This shifting political landscape reveals the centrality of transnationalism within global politics, the historical and political contingency of diasporas, and the precarious agency of refugees Politik African diaspora / Political aspects Exiles / Political activity Refugees / Political activity Transnationalism / Political aspects / Zimbabwe Transnationalism / Political aspects / Rwanda Political participation Authoritarianism / Zimbabwe Authoritarianism / Rwanda Menschenrechtspolitik (DE-588)4169433-8 gnd rswk-swf Ausland (DE-588)4068999-2 gnd rswk-swf Flüchtling (DE-588)4017604-6 gnd rswk-swf Simbabwer (DE-588)7737219-0 gnd rswk-swf Ruander (DE-588)4444772-3 gnd rswk-swf Autokratie (DE-588)4206090-4 gnd rswk-swf Politische Betätigung (DE-588)4133612-4 gnd rswk-swf Ruanda (DE-588)4076910-0 gnd rswk-swf Simbabwe (DE-588)4049850-5 gnd rswk-swf Simbabwer (DE-588)7737219-0 s Ruander (DE-588)4444772-3 s Ausland (DE-588)4068999-2 s Politische Betätigung (DE-588)4133612-4 s Menschenrechtspolitik (DE-588)4169433-8 s 1\p DE-604 Ruanda (DE-588)4076910-0 g Simbabwe (DE-588)4049850-5 g Flüchtling (DE-588)4017604-6 s Autokratie (DE-588)4206090-4 s 2\p DE-604 Jones, Will 1986- Verfasser (DE-588)1121112188 aut Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-316-61253-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781316672020 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
