jänis Rokpelnis:
a rough-edged Romanticist
The collection of articles unites the proceedings of the conference
that took place on the 22nd of October, 2015, and was devoted to the
70th birthday anniversary of Jānis Rokpelnis. The compiler of the
collection of articles is Dr. philol. Anda Kubuliņa.
Contribution of Jānis Rokpelnis to Latvian poetry and literature
after World War II is significant and relies on his modern, cultivated
language and developed stylistics, strophic form in poetry, unusual
imagery, composite constructions of the narrative. Jānis Rokpelnis,
being a poet, also writes prose texts, scripts for animation films; for
instance, together with Arnolds Burovs he created a cartoon, based
on the poem “Umurkumurs” by Aleksandrs Čaks. Moreover, he com-
posed the monograph about Knuts Skujenieks “When the ink pours
heavily (Smagi urbjas tinte). Rokpelnis is deeply interested in the hi-
story and language, visual arts and culture in general. The novel “Vir-
tuālais Fausts (Virtual Faustus) is perceived as the most avantgarde
work of Rokpelnis: it generalizes the theme of life in the virtual world,
which has not been described in Latvian literature before that. Jānis
Rokpelnis was one of the writers who were severely criticized by go-
vernmental authorities in the 1970s and 1980s.
The authors in the collection of articles pay attention to various
aspects of the works by Jānis Rokpelnis, mostly analyzing his poetry
from several decades.

Griezīgo šķautņu romantiķis
A linguist Juris Baldunčiks in the article The Play with De-
mons, or Linguistic Texture of Virtual Faustus”” concentrates his
attention on the usage of the language material in the novel “Virtual
Faustus”, revealing the desire, characteristic of Rokpelnis, to use dif-
ferent layers of language in the literary text - slang, loanwords, jargon
and even argot.
A poetry scholar Ieva E. Kalniņa in the article Analysis of One
Poem in the Context of Love Poems by Jānis Rokpelnis” performed
an analysis of the poem “my memory is so short / every morning I
shave it away...”; the analysis is based on the tradition of poetic ana-
lysis of Mikhail Gasparov.
The article A Sharp Polyhedron Oxymoron: The Analysis of
The Cry of Rocky Nightingale”” by Anda Kubuliņa offers an anal-
ysis of one poem, providing the insight into the opinions of critics and
researchers about the peculiarities of the poetry of Rokpelnis.
Viesturs Vecgrāvis in the article Jānis Rokpelnis: Several Fea-
tures of Romanticism” connects the imagery and poetic principles
of Rokpelnis s poetry with the tradition of Romanticism, spotting not
only the obvious parallels and echoes, but also the differences due to
the influence of Modernism.
The article Instrumentation of Rokpelnis’s Poetry” by Ro-
nalds Briedis is devoted to the musicality and sounding principles of
Rokpelnis s poetry, stating that, in contrast to the tradition of improv-
ing the text euphony, instrumentation in Rokpelniss poetry mostly
serves the opposite purpose - it stresses language imperfections, un-
usual imagery.
Raimonds Briedis in the article Rokpelnis: Peculiarity of
Rhymes - Transformation and Confrontation” scrupulously re-
searches the system of rhymes in Rokpelnis’s poetry.
Sigita Kušnere in the article The Image of a Bird in Rokpel-
nis^ Poetry” analyzes one specific image, interwoven into Rokpel-
niss poetry, paying special attention to the first collection of the poet,
“Star, Shadow of a Bird and Others” (1975), revealing the ambiguity

and multilayered character, contemporaneity and mythological ori-
gins of the image.
The article Directions of the Change of Nature Images in
Jānis Rokpelnis’s Poetry” by Inta Čaklā is devoted to the strategy
of creation of poetic images, revealing the synthesis of poetic tradi-
tions of various time periods in the works by Rokpelnis, paying special
attention to the relatively rarely used nature images, their peculiarities
and poetic nuances.
Anda Kubuliņa in the article From the Web to the One, Who
‘without a radius travels his road’” pays attention to the late works
of Rokpelnis, exploring the inclusions of biblical images and the doc-
umentations of Christian sense of the poet.
Marians Rižijs in the article ‘“Big* and ‘Small’ Time Relation-
ships in Rokpelnis’s Poetry” analyzes the categories of time, as well
as the range of time-related images and multilayered meanings in Rok-
pelnis’s poetry.
A literary scholar Olga Senkāne in the article Reminiscences
of Plato in Rokpelnis’s Poetry” and a philosopher Māra Rubene in
the article Distance and Futurity - Jānis Rokpelnis: Poetry” pay
attention to the reflections of philosophical thought of various time
periods, starting from Plato to Modernism and contemporary think-
ers, in the poetry of Rokpelnis. These reflections are of various nature:
from direct contacts and references to reminiscences and implications.
The authors of the collection of articles are researchers and aca-
demic staff of the following institutions: Institute of Literature, Folk-
lore and Art of the University of Latvia (UL), Faculty of Humanities of
the UL, Faculty of History and Philosophy of the UL, Faculty of Social
Sciences of the UL, Latvian Academy of Culture, Rēzekne Academy
of Technologies, and Ventspils University College.
