In A House Full of Females} Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, one of
our most admired historians, pieces together these little-known
lives using rare diaries of the times, as well as albums, ledgers,
meeting notes, letters, personal artifacts, minute books, and
quilts left by first-generation Latter-day Saints« Ulrich gives us
a rich, fulsome portrait of who these women were and shows
how their “sex radicalism”---the idea that a woman should
choose when and with whom to have children----gives us a new
understanding of the earliest days of Mormonism.
In this groundbreaking book, we see how these women en-
abled the religious movement to flourish by using their own
spiritual gifts and organizational savvy. Radicalized by the
1830s and ’40s, many had left behind conventional lives in the
eastern United States, Great Britain, Canada, and Europe, giv-
ing up families, marriages, and the comforts of an established
orderly existence to establish a new Zion in the American West.
We see how these women sought, and were granted, the right
to vote in the state of Utah in 1 870 by a Mormon-dominated
legislature, fifty years ahead of the vote nationally ratified by
Congress, becoming political actors in spite of, or because of,
their marital arrangements. And we see how, and why, these
women could support a national campaign------woman suffrage
led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony-------for
political and economic rights while defending marital practices
that to most seemed relentlessly patriarchal.
Ulrich has re-created a full and fascinating narrative of the
personalities and lives of these extraordinary women and men,
to make real for us how they made their way in this new society,
and how that society, which didn't start out embracing po-
lygamy, over time, beginning in 1841 when Joseph Smith took
his first plural wife, developed its “pecu n,"
as Ulrich describes it, even in secret from other members of its
own community. Ulrich shows that for the Latter-day Saints,
plurality was not simply a social system; it was seen as a means
of salvation and, to some, even a way to defy convention.
