Summary
“The Soul as a Mirror”:
Studies on the Cappadocians, Augustine and Abelard
This book focuses on two of the most prominent figures
of Christian late antiquity, Gregory of Nyssa and Aurelius
Augustine. To a large degree, these authors from the
fourth and fifth centuries determined the nature of
Christian theology and philosophy of the following centu-
ries in its Greek and Latin form. In the interpretation of
their work, it is very inspiring not only to trace the birth
of Christian thinking, but also the tackling and recreation
of ancient philosophical motifs which take place here.
The study “The soul as a mirror: The metaphor of
the mirror in Gregory of Nyssa’s Homilies on the Song
of Songs and its Platonic inspiration” deals with the “phi-
losophy” of the Old Testament Song of Songs as an as-
similation to God, which is how Gregory interprets phi-
losophy in his multifaceted continuation of the Platonic
inspiration. The metaphor of the soul as a mirror which
always reflects the thing towards which it is turned does
not seem to have an exact counterpart in any of his pre-
decessors. Gregory complements the Orphic, Platonic
and Neo-Platonic motifs of the mirror with a new empha-
sis on the soufs own choice of the model which the soul
imitates.
The next study, “Proper names and the term ουσία
in the Cappadocian polemic against Eunomius” is also
concerned with the Christian reinterpretation of ancient
thinking and ancient terminology. Unlike his theological
adversary Eunomius of Cyzicus, the Cappadocians Basil
of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa understand all human
speech as a convention expressing the effect upon us, noi
the substance (ουσία) of things. As for proper names,

Basil posits an original idea: a name evokes a concur-
rence of characteristic features known about its bearer.
On the contrary, Eunomius is convinced that a name in-
dicates the substance, and a proper name at least denota-
tively refers to the substance. While Gregory shares Ba-
sil’s concept of speech and proper names as not indicating
the substance, his rendering of ουσία as an Aristotelian
substance is much closer to his adversary Eunomius than
his brother Basil, whom he admired but whose Stoic (?)
conception he had to correct explicitly.
The Cappadocian polemic against the Neo-Arian Eu-
nomius is also discussed in the study “Do the names of
the same reference have the same sense? God the Father
according to the first book against Eunomius”. The aim
here is to compare the Cappadocian conception of the
person of the Father in the divine Trinity with that of Eu-
nomius, not only as it was interpreted by the Cappado-
cians but also as it was probably intended by the author
himself, from whose work - condemned as heretic - only
little has survived. Like the two Cappadocians, Eunomius
draws on the ancient philosophical conceptions known to
him; like his two adversaries, nevertheless, he does not al-
low himself to be solely determined by them, but employs
them to serve his theological intuition. His intuition,
however, differs from that of the two Cappadocians: Eu-
nomius does not want to identify the “Father” with the
first divine substance itself (Eunomius uses the phrase
“substance”, ουσία, to refer to what the Cappadocians call
a hypostasis or person), but with a certain aspect of this
substance, which gives rise to the second substance, i.e.
the Son. Moreover, the “Father” is not hypostasised in
something different from the first substance itself, but it
seems to be something like its function. This theological
issue is also related to a philosophical one, namely what
it is that different names related to the same bearer de-
note.
A direct comparison between Gregory and Augustine
is drawn in the study entitled “The metaphor of three
men and the metaphor of gold in Gregory of Nyssa and

in Augustine’s treatise De Trinitate Even such a partial
topic as the usage of two metaphors in the Trinitarian
doctrine makes it possible to outline the similarities and
differences between the two authors; at the same time, it
makes evident that the relationship between Augustine
and the Cappadocian theologians is not so clear as we
perhaps would like to have it given the important role
they played in the history of Christian thinking.
In this book, Augustine himself is presented in two
studies concerned with closely related topics of the or-
der and divine providence. The study entitled “Occultus
ordo? Licentius and Augustine on the order in the dia-
logue De ordine” shows two different concepts of the or-
der (ordo) that can be found in one of Augustine’s Cassi-
ciacum dialogues, De ordine. Against the notion of his
young friend and disciple Licentius, who regards the Sto-
ic chain of causes and the divine arrangement of the
good and the evil as the indispensable moments of the
world order, Augustine posits a concept of the order
grounded in the intelligible world of forms, which, how-
ever, does not stand as a fact in our historical world, but
rather as a task. In order to understand it and fulfil it,
one needs to study the seven liberal arts based on the
Pythagorean principle of the numerical order of the
world and the human soul.
The development of Augustine’s theory of the world
order from his early works until his Confessions is traced
in the chapter “Providentia, praescientia, praedestinatio: Au-
gustine’s development from his philosophical faith in
providence until his doctrine of predestination”. The tri-
ple conception associated with these terms appeared only
gradually in Augustine’s works and it took some time be-
fore it became terminologically fixed. What prevails in
his early works is the philosophical concept of divine
providence (providentia) as we know it from De ordine. It
is then gradually replaced by theological queries about
God’s atemporal knowledge of all events of the human
world (praescientia). And finally, Augustine’s doctrine of
grace requires not only a theory of God’s anterior knowl-

edge of human destinies, but also an active intervention,
and even their predestination before the creation of the
world (praedestinatio).
The concluding study entitled “The theory of the
particular in Abelard s interpretation of Isagoge”, though
dedicated to a much later author, also brings interesting
evidence about the Christian reception of ancient issues;
in this case, it is the interpretation of Porphyry’s Isagoge.
In his thinking, Abelard wants to strictly rely on the par-
ticulars, regarding the universals as mere words, or, more
precisely, meanings of words; in spite of that, his concep-
tion of the particular is much less known than his theory
of the universals. Abelard is convinced that the particular
is not a mere concurrence of accidental properties which
are universal; instead, he deduces it from a unique “per-
sonal distinction” (discretio personalis), which determines
the unity and uniqueness of each being. The last study in
the book thus makes it possible to return - in the hind-
sight of more than eight centuries as well as from
a slightly different perspective - to the Cappadocian issue
of proper names, also related to the knowledge and com-
prehension of the particular.
As a whole, the studies not only show how Christian
authors drew on ancient models, but also reveal the spe-
cifics of Christian thinking, in which the human choice is
emphasised together with the world order based on a di-
vine numerical arrangement, which, at the same time, is
a task human beings need to fulfil; this also includes the
aim to grasp a single divinity as a unity of three mutually
equal persons or take the particular in its uniqueness as
a point of departure in philosophy.
