THE “FOR SALE” MAN
PHILOSOPHICAL-ANTHROPOLOGICAL
AND AXIOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS
(Summary)
The First part of the study is based on the Immanuel Kant’s defini-
tion of human nature and human dignity as autonomous and unique val-
ues that cannot be used and instrumentalized by anybody and by any-
thing. This interpretation is projected on varieties of topics and issues.
The analysis starts by the opposition between Intellectual and Other as
described in the famous Ortega’s essay under the same title. The Plato’s
dialog “Phaedo” is analysed as focusing another meaningful opposi-
tion: between the abstract philosophical knowledge and the sensitive
knowledge of the ordinary man. The Enlightenment idea of unity of
truth, good and beauty, of synthesis between reason, freedom and mo-
rality is described as human essence ideal construction, as philosophi-
cal dream and education imperative. The study compares the ideals of
the young Enlightenment culture regarding the human nature and the
ageing post-war, postmodern vision of the human essence within the
psychoanalitical, existentialist, phenomenological concepts.
The Second part has an interesting subject: relations between the
doubles and the human originals, the domination of the doubles and
their relationship to the original. Axiological point of view puts the
accent on two concepts: value and price. In the relationship double ֊
original, leader is double and he changes human value in human price.
Special place in the paper takes the problem for evil in the face of devil.
The article is focused on the complex relations between the double - the
dark side of man - and the devil as the purest form of this dark side. The
two concepts are related to the crisis of human identity. When the Self
begins to doubt its own integrity, then dark motives, suspicions and
insecurity come out into the light of day. Several impressive images,

in which the Devil plays the main role, will illustrate his intervention
in the life of the Self. The last part puts the question for contemporary
image of devil - mass media.
The Third part, titled The Market and the Women. Feminist Inter-
pretations and Debates justifies the conclusion that in its various hy-
postases, the female experience provides resources to overcome market
logic, classical hierarchies and subject-object dichotomy. Successfully
combining two registers (body and spirit; private and public), this ex-
perience as a relation and “being-with”, opens the way of a new type
of economy.
The main statement of the Fourth part is that the fundamental
reason for the transformation of the human being into “a being for
sale” is the vision of separation and the subject-object division. Only
when a human being is depersonalised and turned into an object, he/
she can be converted into “something” for sale. The subject-object
division lies in the very basics of both the western philosophy and
the classical physics. In contrast, the eastern thought and the quantum
physics present concepts, which go beyond the subject-object divi-
sion and the dualistic approach to the world as a whole. What are the
specifics of this different vision of the world? What is the place of the
human being in the Universe and what should be the human behaviour
according to such a vision? These are the questions that we are trying
to answer here based on the ideas of the contemporary physics and
the ancient Chinese philosophical thought. The aim is to show that
the vision of the Universe from the viewpoint of dynamism and unity
significantly influences the understanding of the mission of the human
being in such a Universe.
The Fifth part - "To Be or to Have " in the Context of Green Citi-
zenship (Between Ecotopia and Utopia) - interprets the ecovillage
movement as an alternative to the contemporary consumerist society.
Based on Erich Fromm’s notion that there are two modus Vivendi - “to
have” (when the sense of our lives is the acquisition of goods and ser-
vices in ever-increasing amounts) or “to be” (when we experience life
through love and creativity) - we distinguish two types of philosophy

that stand behind respectively (1) the modem society and (2) the ecovil-
lage community. While the former is a hierarchical society dominated
by the principles of economic growth and interests where “to have”
mode prevails, the latter is an attempt of a community with horizontal
structures where solidarity and “to be” culture are balancing the eco-
nomic sphere. In order to analyze the ecovillage dynamics in the con-
sequent subchapters of the paper we address issues like: (1) History of
the concept and of the phenomena Ecovillage; (2) Ecovillage context in
Bulgaria; (3) Active citizens VS passive consumers; (4) Are ecovillages
an alternative, a part of the system or an escape from it?, etc.
