SUMMARY
The Resurrection of National Dignity
1.
The year 1968 was not a coincidental for the
eruption of demonstration of the Kosova Albanians, an
eruption of anger and revolt against the Serb-Yugoslav
occupation.
The year began in a tribute to the Albanian national
hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu and the 500 anniversary
of his death. This mighty figure of the Albanian history,
in all Albanian inhabited territories - like it happened five
centuries ago - became a symbol of the national pride
and unity.
It was a year when many poetries and songs were
devoted to him. In all Albanian territories an enthusiasm
and national romance ensued.
A Symposium was organized in Prishtina, whereas in
Tirana commenced the Conference on Albanian Studies,
both dedicated to this chivalrous Albanian. Albanologists
from all the fields of Albanian studies, Albanians and
foreigners, from all parts of the world, speaking to these
scientific tribunes about his achievements in many
languages of the world, seemed like once again gave life
to the ancient Big Albanian Year (15th century).
The enthusiasm originated from this big anniversary
was substantiated with the debates for the standardization
of the Albanian language (22-23 April) which took place

in Prishtina and augured the Congress on the Albanian
Language which would commence in Tirana in 1972.
These historic events important for the whole
Albanian nation, and this part of the nation which was
occupied for centuries, manifested the beginning of the
realization of their cential aspirations and dreams for
liberation and national unification, and as a result,
inspired a national movement of the Albanians in the
territories under Yugoslavia.
In this Albanian national movement, the liveliest and
most apparent was the Albanian student youth. Hence,
took the lead and articulated the appropriate demands and
defended them in the demonstrations.
This was a period when even in other parts of
Yugoslavia a particular socio-political situation was
created, a result of rivalry between the liberal Croation
and Slovene forces and the unitarist Serbian forces. This
battle between the two opponent political streams in
Yugoslavia, after the Brione Plenary Session (1966)
created a liberal intermezzo , and a momentary pause of
repression in Kosova as well. The Albanian resistance
movement, legal and illegal, made use of these events to
forward the demands that the Albanian nation be
recognized the status of a nation, with the right to self-
determination and the separation, and Kosova be
recognized the status of a Republic.
But, the Kosovian political bureaucracy, which was
of quisling type, did not support these demands to the
end. These demands were national ones and were
presented legally. Soon after the Yugoslav authorities
ordered to hush the request for the Republic of Kosova,
they began to organize a campaign against it. Such
circumstance made the Albanian national forces - headed
again by students - seek new forms for the protection of

their demands. By having the legal ways closed, they
began organizing demonstrations, which commenced on
27 November 1968, deliberate on the verge of the
National Day, 28 November (Albanian National Libera-
tion Day).

The demonstrations of the Albanians simultaneously
took place at the same time when student demonstrations
around the world were being organized, the two had only
one thing in common, the famous year of 1968.
Unlike students movements in the world which was
headed by the so-called the New Left, a movement with
social character which aspired a better social order, the
Albanian student movement of that year had an ordinary
national character, the national liberation and the
resistance against everlasting slavery, exercised against
our martyr nation. The Albanian movement empathized
with the world student movement only as another
progressive movement, but the path of the Albanian
student movement was structured by its illegal and half
legal national political groups, these well organized and
ethical groups operated within the movement. It is here
we should look for the reason why this movement never
diminished completely, but its glow, although declining
at times, remained lit from the 1968 up to 1981 when it
became a flared into a huge flame.

The Demonstrations of 1968 were organized by the
political Group of Prishtina students: Osman Dumoshi,
Adil Pireva, Selatin Novosella, Ilaz Pireva, Xheladin

Rekaliu, Afrim Loxha, Skender Mu9olli, Skender Kastrati
and Hasan Derrmaku. The nucleus of this group operated
illegally since 1964.
The activities of this political Group may be classify
in three stages:
- The first stage begins with the establishment of the
Group, around 10 June 1964 and ends in August 1967;
- The second stage begins in August 1967, when the
reorganization of the Group takes place, and ends in
September 1968.
- The third stage begins in September 1968 when the
Group decides to organize demonstrations and ends with
its disintegration, precisely when, immediately after the
demonstration were organized, all members of the Group
were arrested.
This political Group constructed its political field of
operation on the occasion of its reorganization in 1967,
on the bases of the political program of the Revolutionary
Movement for the Albanian Unification, established by
Adem Demaiji. This political structure consisted of:
- Rising the national consciousness through reading
the national history literature and the publications of the
Albanian Resistance Movement against servitude;
- Establish contacts with the masses and Albanian
workers and intelligence in order to propagate verbally
and later through written documents, national ideas, the
ideal of liberation and the unification with Mother
Albania;
- Revealing of assimilating, denationalizing and
obliterating intentions of the Serb-Yugoslav regime
against Albanian population;
- Introduction with the reality in Albania in order to
cite aspirations for national liberation and unification, etc.
Not reading but the life itself was the grounds of ideo-

political forming of this Group. So, it was not ideologic
Group but it was a mere patriotic one, they believed
national issue was above all issues.
The organizational role of this political Group in
organizing the 68 demonstrations is evident and almost
reachable. This role manifested through the ethical
activities organized in the framework of general activities
of the Albanian patriotic forces of the time, and in
coordination with other patriotic groups in Podujeva,
Ferizaj and Gjilan, and the citing in organizing
demonstrations in their towns as well, in determining the
goals of the demonstrations, spreading of the idea of the
demonstrations in all levels of the society, scheduling of
the time when the demonstrations should take place,
inviting as many participants as possible, setting of the
agenda of demonstrations (placards, flags, speeches etc.),
organizing of demonstrations (procession and itinerary,
starting points, introduction of demands, pronouncements,
smashing of police barricades and finally, organized
dissipation) etc.

The idea of organizing the demonstrations of 1968
started spontaneously through contacts of the Group of
the students with the LLap residents.
It happened at the beginning of September 1968.
In the framework of the national activity, part of the
Group went to Baj5ine village, at 40 members family of
Gjata, at that time the largest family in Llap, a
distinguished family known for hospitality in all of Llap
region.
The purpose of the visit was to hear what the
population thought about the socio-politic circumstances

of the time, to discuss together the problems that troubled
this part of the Albanian nation.
The idea for demonstration resulted from the context
of this discussion and developed the same night in that
Llap guest room. The conclusion that the Albanian
population of Kosova should organize demonstration for
the Republic of Kosova in spite of the consequences was
drawn.
The idea for organizing demonstrations was
approved in two of the Group meetings held in September
1968. Initially, the Group itself was doubtful whether
organizing of the demonstrations was necessary. These
doubts were settled through a verbal survey. The survey
was conducted with the members of all social groups,
students, intellectuals, workers, peasants and even the
political authorities of Kosova.
Students, peasants, workers and teachers (from the
intellectual
group), were those who were in favor of organizing
and participated in the demonstrations massively.
On the occasion of the moment of the decision for
the organizing of the demonstrations, the Group made
some kind of a solemn pledge which indicated the
following:
I am in favor of the demonstrations and I will
perform all the duties requested from me by the Group. It
is my honor and I feel honored that I belong to the Group
which will organize the demonstrations. I have once
chosen the path to the freedom of my nation and there is
nothing that will make me abandon it. I am aware that
there is a long and difficult way to go through and that
death could also result in this course, but dieing for
freedom, for Kosova, for Albania seems like resurrection
to me.

The main propose of the 1968 demonstrations, as
presented by the political Group of the students, were:
- Rise the voice of protest against Serb-Yugoslav
servitude and the expression of objection and disagreement
with such a servitude;
- Augmentation of the Kosova issue and its
internationalization;
- Inform the Yugoslav and world opinion with the
Albanian issue in Yugoslavia and apprise them that the
Albanian Resistance Movement in Yugoslavia in the
future would be presented as a unique factor;
- Presentation of Albanian national aspirations in
general and the option of the autonomy of the Albanians
in Yugoslavia in form of a republic (the Republic of
Kosova) under the framework of Yugoslavia;
- The use of the highest pattern of peaceful resistance,
such as demonstrations, submission of requests which
serve national purpose of the Albanians in Yugoslavia.
These objectives were presented in the slogans and
placards, in the speeches which were prepared in advance
and read during the demonstrations and the Call for
participation in demonstrations, written in form of a
pragmatic poetry titled: JOIN US IN DEMONSTRA-
TIONS! These were also the source documents of the
demands and the objectives of the 1968 demonstrations.
The main slogans written on the placards and which
were also articulated alongside, were:
We demand self-determination with the right to
separation! We demand a Republic!
“Kosova Republic!”
National Liberation War did not bring us freedom!
Down with colonialist policy towards Kosova!
We demand our own Constitution!

We demand our university! ”
We demand the unification of all Albanian
territories with Kosova!

The demonstrations had a great echo in Kosova,
Albania in Yugoslavia and the world. World Telegraphic
Agencies, newspapers, radio and TV enlighten the
demonstrations accordingly.
Only after the demonstrations some social events
began to develop undaunted and rapidly and a better
affirmation of the national rights of Albanians in Kosova
began. Although officially had nothing to do with any
compromises with the demonstrators, a great number of
their demands were accomplished gradually and silently
anyway, such as the actual use of the national flag
without having previously passed any particular law for
it, the establishment of the University of Kosova, the
adoption of the 1974 Constitution, the improvement of
the national structure of students and workers, etc.
The fulfillment of the demands of demonstrations
would have been in much more favor of the Albanian
nation if the political bureaucracy of Kosova wouldn t be
so much after their career but imperturbable instead. If
the Kosova authorities would make use of their political
wealth, created after the demonstrations, undoubtedly
much more would have been accomplished, and most
probably Kosova would have gained the status of a
Republic.
The biggest achievement of the demonstrations was
that they succeeded in citing and expending a better
organized Résistent Movement opposing the Serb-
Yugoslav servitude. If 1968 demonstrations would not

take place, the expansion of this movement would not
even be assumed in the later years.
Even earlier, participants of the Movement, as the
most conscious members of the people, were aware that
Serb-Yugoslav vassalage was not eternal. The demonstra-
tions of 1968 made the masses of people see the freedom
in the horizon of a not very far future, made even the
Serb-Yugoslav vassals understand the Albanian resistan-
ce, not only the illegal one, will in the future become a
powerful and unique factor and that the Albanian
problem was a key problems in Yugoslavia, a burden
which would also be felt by them.
Many activists which participated in the demons-
trations of 1968, among them the national heros Jusuf
Gervalla and Rexhep Mala, became the organizers of
illegal groups and organizations which organized patriotic
activities during 70s, thus advancing the Resistance
Movement to the level of a National Movement which
would prepare for the 81s onward epoch.
