Zusammenfassung: | Originally published in 1975, The Machiavellian Moment remains a landmark of historical and political thought. Celebrated historian J.G.A. Pocock looks at the consequences for modern historical and social consciousness arising from the ideal of the classical republic revived by Machiavelli and other thinkers of Renaissance Italy. Pocock shows that Machiavelli’s prime emphasis was on the moment in which the republic confronts the problem of its own instability in time, which Pocock calls the "Machiavellian moment."After examining this problem in the works of Machiavelli, Guicciardini, and Giannotti, Pocock turns to the revival of republican ideology in Puritan England and in Revolutionary and Federalist America. He argues that the American Revolution can be considered the last great act of civic humanism of the Renaissance and he relates the origins of modern historicism to the clash between civic, Christian, and commercial values in eighteenth-century thought. This Princeton Classics edition of The Machiavellian Moment features a new introduction by Richard Whatmore |

Pocock ; with a new introduction by Richard Whatmore Princeton ; Oxford Princeton University Press 2016 1 Online-Ressource (xxvi, 634 Seiten) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Princeton classics Originally published in 1975, The Machiavellian Moment remains a landmark of historical and political thought. This Princeton Classics edition of The Machiavellian Moment features a new introduction by Richard Whatmore Machiavelli, Niccolò 1469-1527 (DE-588)118575775 gnd rswk-swf Giannotti, Donato 1492-1573 (DE-588)118975358 gnd rswk-swf Guicciardini, Francesco 1851-1915 (DE-588)129061719 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1490-1530 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Politische Wissenschaft Political science Great Britain History Political science Italy History Political science United States History Politische Philosophie (DE-588)4076226-9 gnd rswk-swf Machiavellismus (DE-588)4168418-7 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Italien USA Florenz (DE-588)4017581-9 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 gnd rswk-swf Machiavelli, Niccolò 1469-1527 (DE-588)118575775 p Guicciardini, Francesco 1851-1915 (DE-588)129061719 p Giannotti, Donato 1492-1573 (DE-588)118975358 p DE-604 Florenz (DE-588)4017581-9 g Politische Philosophie (DE-588)4076226-9 s Geschichte 1490-1530 z Italien (DE-588)4027833-5 g Machiavellismus (DE-588)4168418-7 s Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g 1\p DE-604 Whatmore, Richard 1968- (DE-588)1080159851 win Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-0-691-17223-1 (DE-604)BV043513994 https://www.degruyter.com/doi/book/10.1515/9781400883516 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
