505 | 8 | |a "In this book, David MacDougall, one of the leading ethnographic filmmakers and film scholars of his generation, builds upon the ideas from his widely praised Transcultural Cinema and argues for a new conception of how visual images create human knowledge in a world in which the value of seeing has often been eclipsed by words. In ten chapters, MacDougall explores the relations between photographic images and the human body-the body of the viewer and the body behind the camera as well as the body as seen in ethnography, cinema, and photography. In a landmark piece, he discusses the need for a new field of social aesthetics, further elaborated in his reflections on filming at an elite boys' school in northern India. The theme of the school is taken up as well in his discussion of fiction and nonfiction films of childhood. The book's final section presents a radical view of the history of visual anthropology as a maverick anthropological practice that was always at odds with the anthropology of words. In place of the conventional wisdom, he proposes a new set of principles for visual anthropology. These are essays in the classical sense--speculative, judicious, lucidly written, and mercifully jargon-free. The Corporeal Image presents the latest ideas from one of our foremost thinkers on the role of vision and visual representation in contemporary social thought."-- | |

spelling | MacDougall, David Verfasser aut The corporeal image film, ethnography, and the senses David MacDougall Princeton Princeton University Press [2005] © 2006 1 online resource (xi, 312 pages) illustrations txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Print version record Matter and image -- The body in cinema -- Voice and vision -- Images of childhood -- Films of childhood -- Social aesthetics and the Doon School -- Doon School reconsidered -- The photographic imagination -- Photo hierarchicus: signs and mirrors in Indian photography -- Staging the body: the photography of Jean Audema -- The ethnographic imagination -- The visual in anthropology -- Anthropology's lost vision -- New principles of visual anthropology "In this book, David MacDougall, one of the leading ethnographic filmmakers and film scholars of his generation, builds upon the ideas from his widely praised Transcultural Cinema and argues for a new conception of how visual images create human knowledge in a world in which the value of seeing has often been eclipsed by words. The Corporeal Image presents the latest ideas from one of our foremost thinkers on the role of vision and visual representation in contemporary social thought."-- Motion pictures in ethnology Photography in ethnology Visual anthropology Anthropologie visuelle Photographie en ethnologie Cinéma en ethnologie SOCIAL SCIENCE / Anthropology / General bisacsh SOCIAL SCIENCE / Regional Studies bisacsh SOCIAL SCIENCE / Sociology / General bisacsh PERFORMING ARTS / Film & Video / History & Criticism bisacsh Motion pictures in ethnology fast Photography in ethnology fast Visual anthropology fast Visual anthropology Photography in ethnology Motion pictures in ethnology Ethnologie (DE-588)4078931-7 gnd rswk-swf Filmanalyse (DE-588)4140882-2 gnd rswk-swf Visuelle Medien (DE-588)4188423-1 gnd rswk-swf Anthropologie (DE-588)4002230-4 gnd rswk-swf Film (DE-588)4017102-4 gnd rswk-swf Körper (DE-588)4031575-7 gnd rswk-swf Kulturanthropologie (DE-588)4133903-4 gnd rswk-swf Fotografie (DE-588)4045895-7 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Kulturanthropologie (DE-588)4133903-4 s Fotografie (DE-588)4045895-7 s Film (DE-588)4017102-4 s Körper (DE-588)4031575-7 s 2\p DE-604 Anthropologie (DE-588)4002230-4 s Filmanalyse (DE-588)4140882-2 s Ethnologie (DE-588)4078931-7 s 3\p DE-604 Visuelle Medien (DE-588)4188423-1 s 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe MacDougall, David Corporeal Image : Film, Ethnography, and the Senses 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
