ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS viii
INTRODUCTION 1
The Introduction gives an overview of Pinter’s significance in Brit-
ish and European theatre, with reference both to his relationship
with Absurdism and to the distinctiveness of his poetic voice. It
also introduces critical approaches considered in the substantive
chapters of the book and identifies some of the most influential
commentators over time.
CHAPTER ONE 8
Pinter and the Papers
Using newspaper reviews, compilations and commentaries contem-
porary to Pinter, this chapter maps the changing critical responses
to the plays and to Pinter as playwright in the press from the 1950s
onwards. The chapter contains six sections: Some early reviews;
Shifting styles; Responses to Pinter’s women; Later plays; Revivals;
Papers in the plays. Commentators quoted include Michael Bi ling
ton, Harry Derbyshire and John Elsom.
CHAPTER TWO 25
Pinter the Absurdist
This chapter introduces the reader to the Theatre of the Absurd and
Pinter’s place within it. The chapter discusses the varying critical
opinions as to whether Pinter’s work can truly be termed “Absurd”,
as well as critiquing and evaluating the categorisation of plays in
this way. The chapter outlines the development of the term “Pin-
teresque” and discusses Pinter’s relationship with Samuel Beckett.

CHAPTER THREE 47
Pol itica I Pinter
This chapter examines the different representations of politics in the
plays, from the earlier Pinteresque, through the more overtly politi-
cal plays ( One for the Road, Mountain Language and Party Time), to
the hybridity of the late plays ( Ashes to Ashes and Celebration).
Themes explored include the Holocaust, representations of contem-
porary totalitarian oppression, and the implied political commentary
in the earlier plays. Among the critics discussed in the chapter
are Michael Billington, Katherine Burkman, Martin Esslin, Charles
Grimes, Marc Silverstein and Mark Taylor-Batty.
CHAPTER FOUR 68
Pinter, Place and Psychogeography
This chapter considers spatial matters under three main headings:
Sets and settings: the physical sets and their relationship to the
broader settings of the plays; Evocations of place: the details of
geography, especially of London; Psychogeography: the relationship
between physical topography and mind. Among the critics consid-
ered in the chapter are Katherine Burkman, Richard Allen Cave,
Austin Quigley, Elizabeth Sakellaridou and Katharine Worth.
CHAPTER FIVE 88
Pinter, Gender and Sexuality
This chapter investigates gender and sexuality in the plays with
regard to three main themes: Pinter’s women; Masculinity on stage;
Heteropower. Among the critics discussed in the chapter are Kather-
ine Burkman, Martin Esslin, Marc Silverstein and Christopher Wixson.
CHAPTER SIX 108
Pinter Off Stage: Radio, TV and Film
This chapter explores plays that have been performed off the stage.
It examines Pinter’s relationship with the adaptation of his work
CONTENTS vii
and discusses some of the differing performance potentials associ-
ated with different means of production. The chapter includes Pinter
plays that were first performed on television and also plays that
were adapted into film.
CONCLUSION 122
This comprises a consideration of the prospects for change in the
nature of critical approaches to, and esteem for, Pinter’s plays, as
well as a reflection on Pinter’s influence on other playwrights.

INDEX 137
This Readers Guide synthesises the wide-ranging criticism on Pinter s major works over
the last half century, bringing diverse sources together in one place, Andrew Wyllie
plays evolved.
The guide charts the controversies that have arisen in response to Pinter s critiques
of political and sexual issues, as well as the playwright s own progress and changing
dramaturgical approach, exploring themes of Absurdism, politics and gender identity.
By placing criticism in its historical context, this guide reveals a transition from
bewilderment and outrage to affection, fascination - and more outrage.
