Zusammenfassung: | Astrophysicist and scholar Martin Harwit examines how our understanding of the cosmos advanced rapidly during the twentieth century and identifies the factors contributing to this progress. Astronomy, whose tools were largely imported from physics and engineering, benefited mid-century from the US policy of coupling basic research with practical national priorities. This strategy, initially developed for military and industrial purposes, provided astronomy with powerful tools yielding access - at virtually no cost - to radio, infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray observations. Today, astronomers are investigating the new frontiers of dark matter and dark energy, critical to understanding the cosmos but of indeterminate socio-economic promise. Harwit addresses these current challenges in view of competing national priorities and proposes alternative new approaches in search of the true Universe. This is an engaging read for astrophysicists, policy makers, historians, and sociologists of science looking to learn and apply lessons from the past in gaining deeper cosmological insight |

This is an engaging read for astrophysicists, policy makers, historians, and sociologists of science looking to learn and apply lessons from the past in gaining deeper cosmological insight Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1900-2000 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1900-2010 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Gesellschaft Astronomy / History / 20th century Science and state / History / 20th century Astronomy / Social aspects / History / 20th century Kosmologie (DE-588)4114294-9 gnd rswk-swf Astronomie (DE-588)4003311-9 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaftsentwicklung (DE-588)4079355-2 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaftspolitik (DE-588)4140181-5 gnd rswk-swf Astrophysik (DE-588)4003326-0 gnd rswk-swf Kosmologie (DE-588)4114294-9 s Astrophysik (DE-588)4003326-0 s Astronomie (DE-588)4003311-9 s Wissenschaftsentwicklung (DE-588)4079355-2 s Wissenschaftspolitik (DE-588)4140181-5 s Geschichte 1900-2000 z 1\p DE-604 Geschichte 1900-2010 z 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-04406-7 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-62025-4 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781107358409 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
