Zusammenfassung: | Ali Mirsepassi's book presents a powerful challenge to the dominant media and scholarly construction of radical Islamist politics, and their anti-Western ideology, as a purely Islamic phenomenon derived from insular, traditional and monolithic religious 'foundations'. It argues that the discourse of political Islam has strong connections to important and disturbing currents in Western philosophy and modern Western intellectual trends. The work demonstrates this by establishing links between important contemporary Iranian intellectuals and the central influence of Martin Heidegger's philosophy. We are also introduced to new democratic narratives of modernity linked to diverse intellectual trends in the West and in non-Western societies, notably in India, where the ideas of John Dewey have influenced important democratic social movements. As the first book to make such connections, it promises to be an important contribution to the field and will do much to overturn some pervasive assumptions about the dichotomy between East and West |

Intellectuals and the politics of despair -- 2. The crisis of the nativist imagination -- 3. Modernity beyond nativism and universalism -- 4. Heidegger and Iran: the dark side of being and belonging -- 5. Democracy and religion in the thought of John Dewey -- 6. Enlightenment and moral politics -- 7. Conclusion Ali Mirsepassi's book presents a powerful challenge to the dominant media and scholarly construction of radical Islamist politics, and their anti-Western ideology, as a purely Islamic phenomenon derived from insular, traditional and monolithic religious 'foundations'. As the first book to make such connections, it promises to be an important contribution to the field and will do much to overturn some pervasive assumptions about the dichotomy between East and West Heidegger, Martin / 1889-1976 / Influence Dewey, John / 1859-1952 / Influence Dewey, John 1859-1952 (DE-588)118525069 gnd rswk-swf Heidegger, Martin 1889-1976 (DE-588)118547798 gnd rswk-swf Politik Intellectuals / Political activity / Iran Islam and politics / Iran Politics and culture / Iran Islam and secularism / Iran Islamic modernism / Iran Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 gnd rswk-swf Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 gnd rswk-swf Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 gnd rswk-swf Iran / Politics and government Iran / Intellectual life Iran (DE-588)4027653-3 gnd rswk-swf Westliche Welt (DE-588)4079237-7 gnd rswk-swf Iran (DE-588)4027653-3 g Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 s Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 s Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 s Westliche Welt (DE-588)4079237-7 g Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s DE-604 Heidegger, Martin 1889-1976 (DE-588)118547798 p Dewey, John 1859-1952 (DE-588)118525069 p Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-521-76882-5 (DE-604)BV037288940 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-521-74590-1 (DE-604)BV037288940 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511975127 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
